Can your truck beat a Ram TRX in drag race?

We are starting a new “Run what you Brung” video series. This is a drag racing series where you bring your high-performance trucks to challenge the new 2021 Ram TRX at our test track – at IMI Motorsports. Do you have a truck that can out-accelerate the 702 horsepower TRX over a 1/8th-mile distance? Our TRX has clocked a 0-60 MPH run at a mile above sea level in 4.56 seconds. The truck that can beat the TRX must be able to get a great launch and maintain very strong acceleration.

For this episode, our friend John brought his 1st-gen Toyota Tacoma with a TRD supercharged 3.4-liter V6. This is a small and light-weight truck with an engine that produces around 300 horsepower. The 4×4 Tacoma weighs around 3,300 lbs and it is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. This Tacoma weighs nearly half of the TRX’s 6,500 lbs curb weight. Oh yea, this 1997 Tacoma has nearly 650,000 miles! The original engine was replaced at 480,000 miles due to a blown head gasket. The supercharger has been rebuilt every 150,000 miles as recommended.

Before we race the 1997 Tacoma against the Ram TRX, we put it up against a new 2021 Tacoma TRD Pro. The new Tacoma is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and a 6-speed manual transmission.
