It is finally here! The 2022 GMC Hummer EV truck makes its world debut. This all-electric off-roader comes out in its high powered and most optioned ‘Edition 1’ version. The Hummer is reborn as a battery-powered 1,000 horsepower super truck that will do a 0-60 MPH in 3.0 seconds, according to GMC. 2022 GMC Hummer EV
This truck is said to go on sale in late 2021 as ‘Edition 1’. It will be initially available in just one color (premium white) and the trimotor configuration long-range with every conceivable option. There is one electric motor in the front that powers a lockable front differential. There are two electric motors in the rear a locker feature and side-to-side torque vectoring. The ‘Edition 1’ is equipped with something called Watts to Freedom mode. This mode has a way to transform the entire truck in order to achieve that 3-second 0-60 MPH acceleration. The batteries and the electrical systems are primed, the air suspension is lowered, there are visual and stereo changes inside the cab to prepare the occupants for maximum acceleration. GMC says it’s designed the make the experience similar to that of launching on a roller coaster ride.
The truck is only available as a crew cab with a short 5-foot bed. It’s based on a “skateboard” platform that is comprised of a frame that holds the battery modules, motors, controllers, and connects to the 4-corner independent suspension system. On top of that sits the unibody structure that is similar in concept to the older Chevy Avalanche. The overall Hummer EV footprint is very similar to that of a GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 or a Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss. GMC designer says that the front is meant to look wide and mean – as any Ford Raptor competitor should.
Much like the new Jeep Gladiator and the Bollinger B2, the Hummer EV has removable roof panels. There are four removable panels that can be stowed in the front storage compartment “frunk”. The rear window can stow away for a very convertible-like open air driving experience. The Hummer EV is also equipped with a power retractable tonneau cover.
Batteries and Range
The ‘Edition 1’ is equipped with the largest battery option which is approaching 200 kWh. GM says it’s comprised of 24 Ultium battery modules. Yes, this battery is about twice the capacity if a current Tesla Model X. This Hummer EV battery translates to 350+ miles of total driving range, according to GMC. This Ultium battery system 800 volt system that can support up to 350 kW DC fast charging capability. This is one of the fastest charging capabilities available today. It means that the Hummer EV can gain about 100 miles of driving range in about 10 minutes on a fast charger and with ideal conditions.
The interior is meant to be luxurious, rugged, and futuristic. The Hummer EV is equipped with a 13.4-inch center infotainment screen. There is an additional 12.4-inch digital gauge cluster in front of the driver. The truck offers 18 camera views. There are two new camera locations underneath the truck. There is one camera underneath pointing forward around the front axle. The second camera is pointing toward the rear. The driver may select between these views while going slowly off-road and negotiating difficult obstacles. This truck has all the conveniences that luxury truck buyers are used to. The Hummer EV Edition 1 offers air suspension, ZF CDC active shock absorbers, and 35-inch maximum traction MT tires. The air suspension is height adjustable. In its maximum height – there is 16-inches of ground clearance. The truck is designed to fit 37-inch tires without any other modifications.
The starting price of the ‘Edition 1’ is $112,595 before destination charges.
