Fuel Economy Announced for the New 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel
The official EPA numbers are in from FCA, and we now know whether the new 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is the most efficient full-size truck in the land.
Before we get to the Ram news, here is what the truck is up against.
The new Ford F-150 with its 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 diesel is rated at:
- 2WD: 22 mpg city / 25 mpg combined / 30 mpg highway
- 4×4: 20 mpg city / 22 mpg combined / 25 mpg highway
The new Chevy Silverado 1500 with the 3.0-liter Duramax I6 is rated at:
- 2WD: 23 mpg city / 27 mpg combined / 33 mpg highway
- 4×4: 23 mpg city / 25 mpg combined / 29 mpg highway
The 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 3.0-liter Duramax is the current king of half-ton truck fuel economy at 33 MPG highway in 2WD and 29 MPG highway in 4×4 trim. Let’s see what the new Ram EcoDiesel can do.
These ratings cover the 2020 Ram 1500 4X2 and 4X4 models.
2020 Ram 1500 EPA Numbers | City | Combined | Highway |
3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel 4×2 | 22 | 26 | 32 |
3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel 4×4 | 21 | 24 | 29 |
2 | 2 | 2 | |
3.6-liter V-6 eTorque 4×2 | 20 | 22 | 25 |
3.6-liter V-6 eTorque 4×4 | 19 | 22 | 24 |
5.7-liter HEMI V-8 4×2 | 15 | 17 | 22 |
5.7-liter HEMI V-8 4×4 | 15 | 17 | 21 |
5.7-liter HEMI V-8 eTorque 4×2 | 17 | 19 | 23 |
5.7-liter HEMI V-8 eTorque 4×4 | 17 | 19 | 22 |
Indeed, the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is not the champion of fuel economy. The new ratings are one mpg less than that of the new Chevy Silverado for highway and combined ratings. The GM half-ton trucks are still the kings of full-size truck efficiency.
The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel still has the distinction of being the half-ton diesel truck with the most torque (at 480 lb-ft) and the highest towing capacity of 12,560 lbs.
The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel MSRP (Tradesman Quad Cab 2WD, plus $1,695 destination) starts at $36,890. A base model Tradesman starts at just over $30,000, the EcoDiesel is a $4,995 option. The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 is manufactored at the FCA Cento facility in Ferrara, Italy.
Our (TFLtruck) test numbers don’t quite reflect the EPA ratings, but we do stuff like towing and a real world highway mpg loop. We’re still scratching our collective heads over these EPA numbers. What do you think?
