Is the 2020 Nissan Titan update enough?

In the video below, we have a lively debate about whether or not Nissan did enough to update the 2020 Nissan Titan and the Titan XD. Keep in mind: the Nissan Titan and Titan XD were in desperate need for an update, or a complete redesign to keep them competitive. Sales numbers have been poor despite major discounts at dealerships.

For 2020, Nissan did more than a trim update. Along with a comprehensive redesign of their interior, an updated exterior design and tech upgrades the 2020 Nissan Titan gets a new nine-speed automatic transmission. Standard on both the Titan and Titan XD, this transmission replaces the seven-speed automatic.

What’s new

An updated 5.6-liter gas V8 and a new transmission. It’s now rated at 400 horsepower and 413 lbs-feet of torque on premium fuel. Or you get 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded. This V8 is standard in both the Titan and Titan XD. There is no more diesel option available for the XD. A new nine-speed Jatco automatic transmission replaces the seven-speed. There is also a larger 3.692:1 final gear ratio.

New nose and tail design. Along with a few additional new colors, the 2020 Titan and Titan XD have a new nose sporting a “boomerang” style headlight design. Taillights have been updated as well and there is a new available wheel design, along with the original wheels – depending on the trim.

Significantly updated interior. Nearly every surface inside has been upgraded or redesigned for 2020. That includes a larger, available nine-inch infotainment display and rearranged switchgear. All 2020 Nissan Titans comes with Nissan Safety Shield 360 driver assistance technology suite. That includes: automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert when backing up, lane departure warning, high beam headlight assist, and class-exclusive rear auto braking assist.

Titan XD can hold and haul more. There have been updates make to the frame of the 2020 Nissan Titan XD. According to Nissan, it can handle an additional 900 lbs of extra payload. In addition, it now has 1,700 lbs added to its maximum towing capability. Nissan hasn’t released official maximum towing and hauling numbers for either truck as of this writing.

We expect both trucks to be smoother and, possibly more efficient. We will address those expectations at the upcoming Titan drive event. Still, we have an opinion about whether or not Nissan went far enough with the updates. As you’ll see in this video – we definitely have two opinions!
