How does the brand new 2018 Dodge Durango SRT do a towing about 7,000 lbs? Roman goes for first drive opportunity in the bad-ass Durango to find out. He also gets a quick opportunity to compare against a 2017 Chevy Tahoe with the 5.3L V8.
The SRT version of the Durango is powered by the 6.4L HEMI V8 with a rating of 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The HEMI is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and an AWD system.
The Durango SRT is rated to tow a maximum of 8,700 lbs (according to Dodge). Although, there are some Dodge specifications that also rate the big SUV at a maximum of 8,600 lbs. In either case, this is a lot of weight. This rating is the same of better than many of full-size body-on-frame SUVs.
The SRT Durango has a specialized “tow-mode” that adjusts many parameters to provide for a more comfortable towing experience. Still, there is no integrated trailer brake controller. Naturally, there is a wiring provision to add an after market controller.
