Ouch! This 1,000 Mile One Day Overland Trip Really Beat Us Up! | Torture Test Ep.4 (Video)

On this episode of the TFLtruck torture test series, we drive our Rebel Rouser project truck over 1,000 miles in one day on an overland camping trip with a trailer. Along the way, we also measure our fuel economy, and spend a night in Oregon. It just so happens that nearly the entire trip from Oregon to Colorado was also in heavy rain.

This is part of our Torture Test video series in partnership with Shell Rotella Gas Truck engine oil. We changed the oil in the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 to the new Rotella fully synthetic engine oil. The idea is to put over 7,500 miles on the truck while also completing five torture tests. At the end, we will look inside the engine to see how it held up. This episode also has our oil analysis results from Polaris Laboratories.

Torture Test Video Series

This time we start the trip in Bend, Oregon. We were there at an overland show/gathering. We are towing a Boreas XT camping trailer from Into The Wild Overland. The fully outfitted trailer weight with an additional rooftop tent and our gear weighs approximately 2,500 lbs.

The Rebel Rouser truck has a few modifications: a two-inch front suspension leveling kit by Falcon, 35-inch Toyo all-terrain tires, Mopar performance air intake and exhaust systems, LINE-X truck gear accessories, and more.

We know what fuel economy this truck is capable of on the highway from a different trip from Colorado to Moab, UT. We got 19.2 MPG on that trip with no load.

This torturous overland towing trip returned a result of 12.6 MPG. Driving in the rain the entire time did not help the economy, but it made the trip more difficult (which is what we wanted).

Does the 2020 Nissan Titan Finally Compete Against the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado? (Video)

2020 Nissan Titan (photo: TFLtruck)

It’s time to take the new 2020 Nissan Titan for a drive and see how it stacks up against the competition after this thorough update. It’s not an all-new truck, but Nissan freshened up the exterior style, gave the truck a new 9-speed automatic transmission, added new technology, and more. Here are all the details.

2020 Nissan Titan

Under the hood is a mostly unchanged 5.6-liter gas V8. The engine tuning has been updates so the engine can react to different octane levels. The engine’s new rating with premium fuel is 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. If you use regular fuel, then the output is the same as before (390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque). There is only one engine/transmission combination. It’s the V8 and the 9-speed automatic transmission. The previous 7-speed is no longer available.

I drove an ad-hoc city and highway loop near Park City, Utah and the Titan’s trip meter read 17.1 MPG after 27.4 miles. I was not able to verify this fuel economy reading a fuel pump during this event, but we hope to test the truck in Colorado on the Ike Gauntlet™ and our highway MPG loop.

Next up was a short towing loop on the I-80 interstate. Nissan prepared several trailers for towing with 2020 Titan King Cabs. I chose the heaviest, which was an Airstream camping trailer with a weight approaching 6,000 lbs. With the tow/haul mode enabled, the transmission shifted quickly and the truck and trailer accelerated with authority (even at high altitude of about 6,500 ft above sea level). I noticed the transmission was hunting for gear a bit when I tried to accelerate to 70 MPH going into the wind. The transmission settled down once we reached the cruising speed.

The maximum towing rating for the new 2020 Titan is 9,370 lbs, and the maximum payload is 1,680 lbs. This does not come close to the ratings from the major competitors. The Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado 1500 can be configured to tow over 13,000 lbs. The competitor payload ratings can reach well over 2,000 lbs.

The off-road portion of the test was reserved for the PRO-4X crew cab. The truck has mostly the same chassis and suspension. It has several skid plates to protect the vital components. The Bilstein shocks are still there as well as the selectable locking rear differential. The truck we drove is still using General Grabber all-terrain tires. The new PRO-4X did very well on the moderately difficult trail that Nissan prepared.

Nissan has not yet announced pricing for the new Titan truck. EPA fuel economy ratings are also not available. The 2020 Titan goes on sale in early 2020, so we will know the rest of the specs soon.

2020 Ford Super Duty Pricing Revealed, Including the Tremor!

The configurator has opened up for the new Super Duty.

After months of waiting and a few glimpses at order sheets, we now have official pricing information for the 2020 Ford Super Duty. The base model XL starts off $605 more expensive than the 2019 model year at $33,705 before destination, rising all the way to $90,530 and beyond for the king of the heap, the F-450 Limited.

Of course, in that pricing we finally have an answer as to how much the eagerly awaited Tremor Off-Road Package costs as well. Available on XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum Crew Cab 4×4 trims with the 6-3/4-foot bed, the Tremor package costs $3,975 over the standard F-250 or F-350 you build. For that money, you get a good amount of off-road kit, including:

  • 35-inch tires on 18-inch gloss black wheels
  • Increased ride height (new front springs)
  • Electronic locking rear differential
  • Limited-slip front differential
  • Skid plates for the fuel tank and transfer case
  • Unique front air dams
  • Water fording vent tubes for axle and transfer case
  • Rock Crawl Mode
  • Trail Control
  • Body-color wheel arch moldings
  • Tremor decals

Engine pricing

Three engines are available in the 2020 Ford Super Duty depending on which model and trim you choose. The F-250 and F-350 get a carryover 6.2-liter gas V8 as the standard powertrain. That engine puts out 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, and comes mated to a six-speed automatic on the F-250 or a ten-speed automatic on the F-350.

Beyond the 6.2-liter unit, there’s also Ford’s brand new 7.3-liter gas V8. The larger displacement engine is a $2,045 option in the F-250 and a $1,705 option on the F-350 over the base engine. It puts out 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque, mated to Ford’s ten-speed automatic transmission.

Finally, there’s the venerable 6.7-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V8 at the top of the range. It’s been updated for 2020, putting out 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque — currently a class-leading torque number against the likes of GM and Ram’s heavy duty trucks. Like the gas engines, the diesel also comes mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission. However, unlike the gas engines, it’s an expensive option over the base trucks. The PowerStroke diesel is a $10,495 option on either F-250 or F-350 over the base gas V8. As with the previous models, the F-450 is only available with the diesel engine.

Correction 11/14/19: I originally posted the upgrade price for the 6.7-liter PowerStroke diesel at $10,745. The actual upgrade is $10,495.

Base MSRP by trim

No Way! Can a Stock-Looking Ford F-150 Crew Cab Run a 0-60 MPH in Under 4 Seconds & and an 11 Second 1/4 Mile? (Video)

Can a stock-looking “ultimate sleeper” Ford F-150 crew cab 4×4 run a 0-60 MPH in under 4 seconds? Can it do a 1/4-mile drag strip run in under 12 seconds? The answer is yes, and yes, and here is how to do it!

I recently went to South Carolina to meet the guys at 5 Star Tuning and test their latest creation – a tuned 2020 Ford Explorer ST. We raced their E50-tuned Explorer ST and a stock Explorer ST against a Dodge Durango SRT. That was very fun and eye-opening, but they had something else in store.

It’s a modified and tuned Ford F-150 truck that looks completely stock from the outside. The truck is using all stock 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 internals and turbos. It has a modified fuel pump and fuel system updates to handle E85 ethanol fuel. It also has a high-performance air intake, intercooler, and a more free-flowing exhaust system.

Naturally this truck also has a fully-customized tuning program from 5 Star that enables the truck to get all the power from the E85 fuel. The 85% ethanol fuel basically increases the octane level of the fuel at an affordable price. This allows for advanced ignition timing and much more power.

This truck has put down 603 hp and 666 lb-ft to the rear wheels (see the video). We saw 590 hp and 650 lb-ft to the rear wheels in person. This truck produces over 700 horsepower at the crank.

What does it all mean in terms of real-world performance? Well, the guys at 5 Star put on two separate drag strips that day. The truck returned an eye-popping 3.97 sec 0-60 MPH. A little later on – the truck ran a 11.6444 sec quarter-mile at 116.40 MPH. If you know anything about drag racing – this is crazy fast for a large vehicle like this 5,200+ lbs pickup truck.

The Neuron T/ONE pickup EV and TORQ Semi-Truck EV Look Pretty Cool

The Neuron T/ONE aims to challenge Tesla.

All the computer-generated images you see are of the Neuron T/ONE EUV (electric utility vehicle) and the electric semi-truck known as TORQ. Neuron, established in 2017 in California, is a start-up company with aspirations to build a multitude of vehicles on various platforms.

There is no data about range, power, price or possible production dates – nothing. Still, the renderings look like they could represent real vehicles in the near future. If nothing else, they are ambitious.

Neuron says that there’s a replaceable reserve power unit and a removable solar panel truck bed cover. Solar panels may be part of the other configurations as well. While only so much power can be pulled from the sun, it may extend the range a bit.

The Neuron T/ONE is a platform that is supposed to support many variants including an SUV/van and a pickup truck. Each of these images provide a few clues as to Neuron’s intent. This includes the ability to tow and (possibly) a 4×4 setup.

The Neuron TORQ

Like the T/ONE, the Neuron TORQ appears to support a variety of different applications. There is a bus, dump truck and semi-truck illustrated. Much like Tesla’s future products, these vehicles look futuristic and plausible.

Neuron says the TORQ’s driver will have 360° view. This is accomplished using wireless systems that allow cameras to see in all directions. This also means an array of video screens, or a multifunctional screen to assist the driver.

Image: Neuron

The platforms are modular, allowing multiple configurations. Body components and hardware are supposed to be interchangeable. It looks like both platforms are similar to the Rivian and upcoming Ford EV pickup truck.

You can read about those vehicles and the Tesla “Cybertruck” here.

Image: Neuron

That platform may be a skateboard-like flat battery pack that doubles as the backbone for both applications. This also means that the cockpits would be free of obstructions giving the driver more space, better visibility and greater internal cargo space.

Once again, there is no data available on these vehicles.

There is a quote

Neuron says of these concepts, “Both vehicles feature a modular platform, upgradeable technology, versatile cargo functionality, a first-class interior experience, and iconic aerodynamics. These vehicles were created to reduce waste and bring forth renewable solutions for the preservation of our environment.”

There is no word on additional information yet. We will keep an eye on this story and give you every update we get. Stay tuned! In the meantime, check out other trucks that are closer to actual production:
