Video: Ford Said We Screwed Up Our Maverick AWD Hybrid MPG Test, So I Re-Ran It With Very Surprising Results!

2025 ford maverick hybrid awd denver 100 mpg loop redo test review

When we ran our first Denver 100 MPG highway loop in our new 2025 Ford Maverick Hybrid AWD we were a bit disappointed by a less than desirable result. Ford called us and said that we should have waited to test the efficiency of this tiny truck until it has around 4,000 miles on the odometer. They said that it would provide a more realistic MPG result, and this is also what the EPA expects and does for their certification.

The Denver 100

The Denver 100 MPG loop is a highway ring E470 toll-road that goes around Denver, Colorado. The average speed of this loop is around 60-61 MPH (with a large section of this route with a speed limit of 75 MPH). The total driving distance is 111 miles.

The first time was back in January with an ambient temperature around 37F. We often test new trucks without many miles on the odometer. Our Maverick had around 300 miles back then, which is fairly normal for a new vehicle we generally test when we take them off-road, road trips, or drag races. Our mini truck registered 29.5 MPG at the pump. We used 87 octane for this test. We generally use the manufacturer recommended octane level when testing vehicles.

We put 4,000 miles on the truck, and I am re-running the same test again. Naturally, we want to see just how much this engine break-in period affects our efficiency. We imagined that we may see 5-10 % improvement in efficiency. This second test was performed in early April with an ambient temperature around 70F. The truck was not changed or modified in any way. It simply had more miles on the odometer. We have not performed an oil change yet.

I am once again VERY surprised when the new calculation showed 41.8 MPG! Whoa! This is a huge improvement over what happened last time. It’s a 42% improvement. The EPA says this truck is rated at 34 MPG on the highway.

What happened? There can be several factors at play. The truck’s engine is now broken in. The gas station may have switched from a winter blend of fuel to a summer blend. This April day was fairly ideal. The ambient temperature was pleasant and the heater no air conditioner had to operate for any significant time.

Video: First Drive in the New Mack Pioneer Long-Haul Semi Truck – Is It Just a Volvo VNL with a Different Badge?

2026 mack pioneer volvo vnl semi truck

It’s time to take the first-ever Mack Pioneer long-haul semi truck for a first drive and learn about all of its features. Is it simply a Volvo VNL with a different badge on the hood and what are all the differences and changes? Let’s dig in!

The Pioneer is an all-new addition to the Mack Trucks lineup. It’s closely related to the Volvo VNL long-haul big rigs. Volvo Group purchased the Mack Trucks parent company in 2000. The two companies have been working together over the last 25 years. The Mack Truck brand first originated in 1900, so Mack Trucks is celebrating 125th anniversary this year.

The Mack Pioneer aims to be one of the most efficient and technologically advanced big rigs on the highway. Think of the Volvo VNL and the Mack Pioneer related in a similar way to how the Chevrolet Silverado is related to the GMC Sierra pickup trucks. A lot of the chassis, powertrain, and electronics are very similar. However, Mack offers more power from their version of the 13-liter turbo-diesel engine (up to 515 horsepower). Mack Trucks says that the latest powertrain in the Pioneer is approximately 11% more efficient than in their current Anthem big rigs. By the way, the next generation of the Anthem is coming at a later date.

The Mack Pioneer has distinct fenders, headlamp shape, and body lines up front. The interior is appointed in a unique way. There is a Bulldog hood ornament up front, and this is the most aerodynamic version of the Bulldog.

The Pioneer is loaded with the latest driver-assistance technology. It has adaptive cruise control with predictive feature. The truck’s computer can learn a particular route (or one can be preloaded). The cruise control will know and prepare for elevations changes, uphills, downhill, or sharper curves ahead of time. If you are approaching a long climb, the system can help gain a bit more momentum up the mountain. All new pickup trucks should have a feature like this.

There are several suspension options, and I drive the premium system with eight air bags in the rear. This system helps to control axle hop and vehicle sway. I did not get a chance to experience at highway speeds with a heavy trailer, so we will have to wait for this opportunity.

Video: Jeep Is Bringing Cool Trucks to the 2025 Easter Jeep Safari

jeep gladiator convoy easter safari

Jeep is bringing several cool concept vehicles to this year’s Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah. Most of them are pickup trucks. The TFL team has been joining this event for the last 13+ years. It’s a celebration of the Jeep community and the off-road industry in one of the most picturesque environments of all.

Jeep Convoy Concept

Perhaps the most impressive concept of the all is the Jeep Convoy. It’s based on the current Jeep Gladiator Mojave. It’s inspired by the 1963 Jeep Gladiator SJ truck and J-series trucks. This concept leans into the military theme. It has a super cool front grille design. The body is painted in a Ghost Ops color with canvas doors and roof. It’s rolling on 40-inch BFG Krawler tires.

Jeep J6 Honcho Concept

This is a Jeep Wrangler conversion that turns it into a two-door pickup truck with a 6-foot bed. It’s one of the more popular concepts, because Jeep currently does not offer a production two-door pickup truck, and has not done so for many years. It features a two-inch suspension lift that allows it to run 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 tires.

Jeep Bug Out Concept

The Bug Out is another take on a two-door Jeep Wrangler-based pickup truck. This time it has an integrated one piece roof that covers both the cabin and the bed. This vehicle is no longer than a four-door Wrangler with a spare tire on the back. The rear section was extended to offer more space on the inside. There is a Gladiator tail gate in the back. Customized high-clearance flares are covering 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 tires.

Jeep Gladiator High Top Honcho Concept

Finally, there is this retro-cool lifted Jeep Gladiator – the High Top Honcho. Painted steel wheels are wrapped in 40-inch BFGoodrick T/A KO3 tires. The axles are upgraded to Dana 60 units with 5.38-to-1 gearing. It rides on a height-adjustable AccuAir suspension.

Here is what we think about these concepts and others. Please join Roman and I in this video.

Kia Is Bringing a New Truck to North America — Just Not the Tasman

Kia announced its launch plans during its investor day, including a new pickup truck for North America.

2024 kia pv5 pickup truck concept cheap small

Over the next five years, Kia plans to launch several new models as part of its “Plan S” business strategy for 2030. We’ve already covered a few notable announcements like the “PV” van series. That particular range will bring in the PV5 later this year, the PV7 in 2027 and the PV9 in 2029 (I see what you did there, Kia). During its investor day Wednesday, though, the Korean automaker announced plans to launch a new pickup truck for the North American market. No, not that one.

While the Kia Tasman has made some enormous buzz since first making its appearance late last year, it’s seen its fair share of controversy…and you can (literally) see why. Scrolling through your comments, it doesn’t seem too many American truck buyers are too keen to see it over here. Whether you’re on that side of the fence or not, the Tasman will remain an overseas model, and we’ll get something different on our shores.

Here’s the rub, though: Kia’s new truck hitting the U.S. market will strictly be electric. To that end, it sounds like we’ll effectively have another rival to the Rivian R1T and the Tesla Cybertruck, as well as the Big Three’s offerings if it’s large enough. We don’t have any more details on this pickup at the moment, though Kia clearly wants some slice of the American truck market. Kia is targeting 80,000 annual sales of the Tasman without the North American market, and it’s even more ambitious with this electric model. For this yet-to-be-named EV, Kia says its targeting a “long-term” annual sales target of 90,000 units.

Even with the current market climate, Kia’s attitude sems to be to charge ahead bold as brass. Under Plan S, the company aims to launch five new models in 2025 alone, and have 15 electric vehicles and 10 hybrid options on the market by 2030. Remarkably specific figures include 4.19 global sales, with a bit more than half the mix being electric (1.26 million) or hybrid (1.07 million).

We’ll have to wait and see when Kia divulges more information, including when it actually plans to put this truck on sale and how much it might cost.
