The Renault Niagara Is a New Small Truck Rival to the Ford Maverick…That’s Not Coming to North America

There’s a new small truck on the way…but it’s specifically for Latin America.

Back in 2023, French automaker Renault debuted a concept for a new small truck. Now, it’s getting closer to launching a production version of a compact, unibody pickup that would compete against the likes of the (now defunct) Hyundai Santa Cruz and the Ford Maverick: the Niagara. That is, if Renault actually planned to bring it to the North American market. That’s not happening, but folks in Latin America will see the new Niagara emerge onto the market as a direct competitor in the small truck segment. Notably, South America is a far hotter market than what we see in the U.S., despite a successful few years for the Maverick.

Renault says the name “conveys strength, resilience and an ability to withstand the elements”, as a not-so-subtle nod to Niagara Falls situated between the United States and Canada. “It’s an invitation to explore the great outdoors,” the company says.

For the time being, Renault is staying mum on exactly what will power the Niagara. It is part of the company’s futuREady strategy, wherein Renault aims to launch 14 new models outside its core market in Europe by 2030. On that basis, it’s likely the Niagara would share a setup with either current Renault models or those upcoming vehicles, including its “E-Tech” hybrid setup or at least a mild-hybrid powerplant putting out somewhere around 200 horsepower. Again, we don’t know those details just yet, but it will likely emerge prior to or at the truck’s full reveal on September 10.

Renault also said it will build the Niagara at its Córdoba plant in Argentina. That’s a fitting place to manufacture it, since that plant also builds the larger Alaskan pickup, which is based on the Nissan Navara (also marketed as the NP300 or Frontier in some markets).

Will the small truck market expand in North America?

So, why are we talking about the Renault Niagara at all, even though it’s not coming here? Well, forbidden fruit is always a fun conversation. For example, we still love the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series, even though that’s never been officially available in the North American market.

With new truck prices creeping well beyond eye-watering levels, this is a further sign of a fairly vibrant small truck competition which America is currently missing. Outside the upcoming Renault Niagara, buyers in Latin America also have the Ford Maverick, sure. But they can also pick up, say, a Chevrolet Montana or the Fiat Toro/Ram 1000 as well as the Fiat Strada/Ram 700. With each generation of truck getting progressively larger and more expensive, you could make a reasonable case that the modern small trucks like the Maverick would be in hot demand…the big hurdle being that automakers would have to commit to building them here.

As the situation stands right now, it doesn’t look like that’s anywhere close to happening. That said, at least the midsize competition should be heating up soon with the return of the Ram Dakota, to say nothing of Hyundai’s second crack at the truck market with a body-on-frame truck in the next few years.
