
The current Ford F-150 hybrid has been very successful for the company, but could Ford expand the electrification to other gas engines for their pickup truck lineup? A recent post on a Ford Mustang 7G forum found evidence of a next-gen 2023 pony car having possible hybrid 2.3L turbo 4-cylinder or hybrid 5.0L V8 powertrain options.
If this information is correct, and the 2023 Mustang will have the hybridized versions of the 2.3L I4 and the 5.0L V8 – then these powerplants could make their way into the Ford trucks and SUVs as well. After all, these engines are designed for rear-wheel-drive (longitudinally-mounted engine) platforms and have 10-speed automatic transmissions.
The current 2.3L I4 is also used in the Ford Ranger and Ford Bronco. The 5.0L V8 is currently used in the Ford F-150. While having two gas/electric hybrid power plants in the F-150 is unlikely, a gas/electric hybrid option in the Ranger and Bronco would be a very welcome option.
If Ford is able to make a very high-performance version of the hybrid V8 power plant – this may also be a possible engine option for the Ford Raptor or Raptor R?
