Here we have the latest image of several 2022 Ford Expedition and 2022 Lincoln Navigator prototypes. Ford’s largest SUVs are getting an update inside and out. What should we expect? It’s about updated style on the outside, new technology on the inside, a special new Expedition off-road model, and possible hybrid powertrains. This information is still unofficial, but all signs point to these SUVs to be powered by PowerBoost hybrid power plants.
2022 Ford Expedition
The 2022 Ford Expedition is rumored to use the new 3.5-liter twin-turbo gas/electric hybrid power from the 2021 Ford F-150. The F-150 combined power rating is 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque. This would give the Expedition more power than ever before, as well as better fuel efficiency. The Canadian agency rates the new 2021 F-150 Hybrid at 24 mpg city / 24 mpg highway / 24 mpg combined. If this translates directly to the U.S. EPA ratings system, it means a significant improvement over the current 19 mpg combined for the Expedition.
The white Expedition prototype that you see here also shows off some aggressive Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT tires. Unofficial reports suggest that this is the new Timberline trim level. This is rumored to be the most off-road worthy Expedition package that slots in just above the current FX4 models. We have tested the current Expedition FX4 several times. It’s a capable package, but having more aggressive off-road tires will ratchet it up a couple of notches.
The prototype also shows a camouflaged interior with what appears to be a very large center infotainment screen. When Ford announced the latest SYNC4 user interface system, they said the system may support screen sizes up to 15.5-inches in size. Are we seeing this large screen in this Expedition test vehicle? It’s hard to say. We will have to wait for more official details.
2022 Lincoln Navigator
There are also images of at least two different updated Navigator prototypes. Once again, the exterior is wearing some camouflage. Will the new luxury SUV be also powered by the same F-150 Hybrid? No, it is more likely to use a high-output H.O. version of the new PowerBoost hybrid that is also rumored for the upcoming 2021 Ford Raptor. The current Navigator is powered by a Raptor engine that makes 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The standard 3.5L V6 Hybrid from the F-150 may not be enough.
I estimate that the upcoming 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be powered by a 5.7L V8 gas/electric power plant with between 450-500 horsepower. Once again – this is unofficial. The new Navigator propulsion needs to make in the neighborhood of 500 horsepower to remain competitive.
