The 2015 Chevy Colorado 4-Cylinder was available for test driving during the recent Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon press event held in Del-Mar, California. Making a respectable 200 horsepower (at 6,300 rpm) and 191 lbs-feet of torque (at 4,400 rpm), the 2015 Chevy Colorado 4-Cylinder is capable of getting 19 mpg city / 26 mpg highway (2WD manual) 20 mpg city/ 27 mpg highway (2WD automatic) and 19 mpg city / 25 mpg highway (4WD automatic).
By comparison, the current Toyota Tacoma with the 2.7-liter, 4-Cylinder makes 159 hp (at 5,200 rpm) and 180 lb-ft of torque (at 3,800 rpm). The Tacoma Access Cab 2WD with a 5-speed manual is rated at 21 MPG city and 25 MPG highway.
Unlike the rest of the line, the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder-equipped Chevrolet Colorado can be equipped with a six-speed manual transmission (an Eaton N8D 6-speed manual). That setup is reserved for the extend cab, 2WD models only. GM feels that automatics will be more popular and preferred by customers.
I do not fully agree with General Motors on this one. I know lots of Tacoma and Frontier owners who prefer a manual transmission over an automatic – especially – off-roading enthusiasts.
We did not get a shot at the manual, but we did drive a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado 4-Cylinder that was pretty close to being a base model. A base-model 2015 Colorado 4-Cylinder starts at $20,995 – we estimate that the Colorado we tested at the event was priced below $24,000.
Despite the short drive, we came away impressed at the smooth overall driving experience and applaud GM for making their cheapest interior better than Nissan and Toyota’s best interiors.
