Toyota is going after Polaris and Can-Am with this Scion 01 SEMA concept SxS. What are the specs? What’s up with the name? Here’s everything we know. Let’s dig in!
Toyota continues to expand its idea of what it means to be a mobility company with this Scion 01 concept off-roader. The name of this concept vehicle has nothing to do with the long discontinued brand of Toyota/Scion economy cars.
This Toyota concept side-by-side uses many “off the shelf” parts: Toyota Tacoma hybrid powertrain with over 300 horsepower, hubs, controllers, and more. It’s put together into a carefully designed chassis with a SCORE and FIA compliant roll cage and special suspension with up to 26 inches of wheel travel.
This machine has the overall dimensions similar to those of a Polaris RZR Pro R 4, a Can-Am Maverick R MAX X, or a Kawasaki Teryx4 H2. The Scion 01 has a wide long travel suspension, but it still fits on a standard trailer.

The concept is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged hybrid power unit that come out of the new Tacoma iFORCE MAX. Toyota says this side-by-side power output is “over 300 horsepower”. It’s able to operate in silent electric mode. It has four doors and seating for four. The hybrid makes it fairly heavy. Toyota says this concept weighs around 4,000 lbs. This is a bit heavy, but this is still a concept. Toyota has many different powertrains to choose from if they decided to put this into production.
The design was done by Toyota’s CALTY studio. What do you think about the overall look of this concept? Also, would you purchase a Toyota side-by-side?
