Project "Helen"!

This truck is several years in the making. I want to introduce you to David’s newest build. This is project “Helen”. It’s a versatile 4×4 truck that was built for under $30,000 and countless amount of hours. David started this project over two years ago, and several things interrupted it. Now, it’s running, driving, and picking up other trucks.

Project “Helen” is a combination of four or five different GM pickup trucks. The main part is a 1970s square body 3/4-ton Chevy truck. David shortened the frame, redesigned the rear leaf suspension, put in a rebuilt 454 cu-in big block V8, and created a custom flat bed. There is much more!

David was inspired by the Trail Mater and several other Youtube channels that build and show off-road wreckers / tow trucks. However, David wanted and needed a versatile truck that he can use for work at this ranch and also for off-road recoveries. His customized flat bed accomodates a reinforced headache rack, tool boxes and two winches that can operate a crane boom. The crane boom is removable and can be installed by one person, as David demonstrates in the video below.

The truck rides on 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 tires. It has a twin stick 4WD transfer case which can allow it to operate in FWD, RWD, and 4×4 configurations.

Please join David and I in this video below. We take project Helen off-road, we drive it on the street, and we lift David’s other GMC truck with it.
