Video: Is the 2025 Ford Maverick Lobo Pickup Truck Worth the Wait?

Should it be a more potent Maverick ST instead?

2025 ford maverick lobo first drive review sport mini truck

It’s time to finally jump into the first-ever 2025 Ford Maverick Lobo and take it for a first drive. Kase goes to California to see what this new mini sport truck is all about. Is it exciting and a ton of fun, or should it be a more potent Maverick ST? Let’s dig in!

First up, here are the specs. The Maverick Lobo only comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 engine and AWD. Ford calls the AWD system Advanced 4WD with a clutch-driven torque vectoring rear differential. You cannot get the LOBO with a hybrid powertrain or with FWD.

The engine produces a healthy 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. It’s hooked up with a 7-speed automatic transmission that Ford calls Quick Shift. It’s basically the Maverick’s standard 8-speed automatic transmission, but one of the gears is skipped. We did not get a chance to do a 0-60 MPH test or a drag race during this first drive, but this is coming soon.

Kase took this mini truck on an autocross course that was set up by Ford. He says the Lobo felt confident and tossable. The Lobo is equipped with a slightly lowered suspension, a quicker ratio steering, and higher performance brakes than other Maverick pickups. This improves its on-road performance, but it also lowers its payload and towing capacity.

Other new Ford Maverick pickups have a payload capacity between 1,350 – 1,500 lbs. The Lobo’s maximum payload is 1,045 lbs. Other Mavericks can be equipped with a package to tow up to 4,000 lbs, but the Lobo is limited to 2,000 lbs of towing. Still, the Lobo can be equipped with a Trailer Backup assist system. 2,000 lbs is enough capacity to pull one or two Waverunners (PWCs) behind it.

The starting price for the Maverick Lobo is $35,255 plus a $1,595 destination charge which adds up to $36,850. Once you load up many options, the Lobo price can go above $42,000.

Why didn’t Ford call this truck the Maverick ST and given it even more power? We don’t have the real answer to this. In the meantime, the Maverick Lobo is a fun little pickup that can carry four or five people and a lot of their things in a fun way.
