A lot is going in the midsize pickup truck segment in 2024. The segment leading Toyota Tacoma had a difficult generation changeover. As Toyota’s factories were switching to building the 4th-generation Tacomas, the sales slumped in a big way. The Toyota Tacoma rebounded in Q4 2024, but Tacoma is still down -17.9% for the year. GM’s Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon grew sales in a huge way compared to 2023. GM had a similar issues with the generational switchover in 2023. GM sold over 136,000 midsize pickup trucks in 2024, but it is still far away from 192,000 Tacomas in 2024.

Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranger also had a successful year. Both can grow their sales in 2025 if they can actually build more pickups. Honda Ridgeline and Jeep Gladiator both declined. The Jeep pickup truck took the greatest hit in sales. We will have to wait and see if the Gladiator 4xe plug-in hybrid will ever reach the market.

Overall, the midsize pickup segment is up a mind-boggling 60.1%. This is a great sign that shows huge interest in these smaller more affordable garage-able pickup trucks. If this continues, it could cut into the full-size pickup truck sales in 2025.

Compact Pickup Trucks

The Q4 2024 compact pickup sales results are mixed. The 2025 Maverick and the 2025 Santa Cruz are both refreshed with new exterior style, interior, new tech, and some powertrain changes. The new Santa Cruz powertrain remains unchanged, but the new 2025 Ford Maverick hybrid has a new upgraded CVT that allows for AWD and a higher tow rating of up to 4,000 lbs. This 2025 change may have something to do with a sales decline for the Maverick in Q4 of 2024.

I initially predicted Ford could sell around 145,000 Maverick compact pickups in 2024, but the Q4 sales decline caused it to come in short. Still, Ford sold over 131,000 Mavericks, which almost three time more than they sold Ranger pickup trucks.
