The midsize and compact pickup segments continue to grow in Q3 2024.

The midsize and compact pickup truck segments are doing good in the third quarter of 2024. While the Toyota Tacoma and Jeep Gladiator sales are down when compared to the previous year, the reasons for this are likely different. The Ford Ranger pickup bounces back into third sales place behind GM and Toyota. Nissan Frontier, Honda Ridgeline, and GMC Canyon are all growing sales. Let’s dig in!

The Toyota Tacoma is still about eight months after doing a complete generation switch to the all-new 2024 Tacoma models. Tacoma sales are slowly returning to normal, but it’s not without problems. The Tacoma still hold the overall best-seller lead by a huge margin. General Motors is in the second place. The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon are both growing, but the Canyon is growing way quicker. The Nissan Frontier holds a competitive 4th place in Q3 2024. The Honda Ridgeline is very close behind.

The Jeep Gladiator is now in last place, as it loses -35% in Q3 when compared to the same time period last year. Ouch!

Both Ford and Hyundai have updated and redesigned 2025 versions of the Maverick and the Santa Cruz on their way to the market. We will have to wait and see how the rest of the year shakes out.

Ford is currently on pace to sell around 145,000 Ford Maverick compact pickups in the United States in 2024. This success should be a call out to all other manufacturers. Consumers want small and affordable pickup trucks, and they are buying a lot of them.
