General Motors Issues Stop-Sale Order for Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon Trucks to Address Software Issue

For the moment, it's unclear exactly what GM's software team is working to address

GM’s updated midsize pickups are currently sidelined from sale due to a software problem.

This week, General Motors issued a new stop-sale order on its redesigned Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size trucks to address an unspecified software problem, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press.

The news follows earlier reports that a large number of Colorados and Canyons parked outside the Wentzville, Missouri plant. According to sources familiar with the matter, the pause in shipping those trucks out resulted from this same software issue, and now the automaker did confirm that to be the case.

Per company spokesperson Kevin Kelly to the Free Press: “We are disappointed when we choose to pause sales, but we are committed to quality and the customer experience, therefore software updates will continue to be part of the process as our vehicles become more and more technologically advanced.” Kelly further elaborated that the team responsible for updating the trucks’ software is “urgently working to overcome any issues in the short-term.”

This is not the only vehicle currently facing a stop-sale due to software concerns. In December, the automaker put out a stop-sale order on the Chevrolet Blazer EV to fix in-vehicle display problems and DC fast-charging concerns. That fix is still pending, while GM did not elaborate on the exact nature of the software issues affecting the Colorado and Canyon. Update: The NHTSA published General Motors’ notice documents pinpointing the issue to the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system.

For now, it appears GM will hold trucks it’s already built at the Wentzville plant, while dealers who already received shipments will not be able to actually sell the vehicles until the company issues a software update. There is currently no distinct time table for when that update will happen.

We will update this story when we have more detailed information.
