Ford Motor Company and electric truck maker Rivian Automotive issued recalls covering more than 277,000 vehicles, according to reports published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Wednesday.
Ford Super Duty recall: Defective antireflective coating on rearview cameras
The vast majority of affected vehicles fall under Ford’s recall. Namely, the latest issue affects 277,040 Super Duty trucks and Lincoln Continental cars between the 2017 and 2020 model years. According to the recall documents, the problem lies with the rearview cameras. The antireflective coating meant to prevent glare may degrade over time due to ultraviolet radiation. That could “lead to a progressively foggy or cloudy rearview camera image” with the Magna Electronics-supplied cameras.
Of the total affected population, Ford says the following numbers of F-Series Super Duty trucks are affected:
- 139,131 F-250 trucks;
- 109,960 F-350 trucks; and
- 14,830 F-450 trucks
While the problem could theoretically increase the risk of a crash when reversing, Ford says it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to that defect. The automaker notified dealers this week, and it will send notices out to Super Duty owners starting September 12.
To remedy the problem, dealers will replace the rearview cameras with ones that will not degrade through UV exposure. Ford’s number for this recall campaign is 22S51, and you can check with your dealer or call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for more information. The NHTSA’s number for this campaign is 22V644.

Rivian recall: Seat belt anchors may not be firmly secured to the B-pillar
As for the California-based EV startup, Rivian’s second recall to-date affects just 207 vehicles. This campaign covers the R1T pickup as well as the R1S SUV, which just recently went into serial production. According to what the automaker told the NHTSA, the front seat belt anchors “may have been inadequately attached to the B-pillar”. Obviously, that is a safety concern, though Rivian said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.
To address the issue, Rivian will inspect affected vehicles and properly secure the bolts, if necessary. It will notify owners starting October 14. In the meantime, those with a R1T or R1S can call Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261. Rivian’s number for this recall campaign is FSAM-924. The NHTSA’s number for the recall is 22V641.
Update 8/31/2022: Added specific F-Series affected populations by model (F-250, F-350 and F-450).
