We finally have official word from GM about the new 2022 GMC Hummer EV truck’s payload and towing capacities. This information was announced at a recent media phone conference. Here are numbers and how they compare to some of the Hummer’s competitors – Ford Raptor and Ram TRX.
Duncan Aldred (GMC and Buick vice president) announced the following specifications for the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Truck Edition 1:
- Max Towing = 7,500 lbs
- Max Payload = 1,300 lbs
Considering that the Edition 1 of the truck is the most luxurious and the highest optioned version of the truck, these numbers are respectable. This truck has an off-road focus and a luxury truck focus. As such, the Hummer EV’s suspension is set up with relatively softer springs. Previous information suggests that the Edition 1 truck has a curb weight of just over 9,000 lbs. If you add 9,000 lbs and 1,300 lbs, this equates to a heavy-duty pickup truck GVWR rating of 10,300 lbs.
On the other hand, these numbers are not as high as a new Ford Raptor or Ram TRX. These ratings are also equivalent to those of a gas-powered midsize pickup truck.
- 2021+ Ford Raptor: Max Towing = 8,200 lbs / Max Payload = 1,400 lbs.
- 2021+ Ram TRX: Max Towing = 8,100 lbs / Max Payload = 1,310 lbs.
Granted, if you add all of the luxury options to the Raptor or the TRX – their effective payload rating will drop below 1,300 lbs. We have verified the Ram TRX max payload and towing capacity on the Ike Gauntlet – the world’s toughest towing test. The TRX holds its own when loaded to the maximum. Take a look at this recent video.
Here is how the Hummer rating compares to some of the other all-electric pickup trucks that are about to hit the market. We have not verified the tow ratings for any of these trucks yet.
- 2022 Rivian R1T: Max Towing = 11,000 lbs, Max Payload = 1,760 lbs.
- 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning: Max Towing = 10,000 lbs, Max Payload = 2,000 lbs.
Here is Roman going for a test drive in a new Hummer EV truck prototype.
