GM makes an announcement this week that the company’s 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 work trucks will no longer have the following engines and transmission. GM is dropping the 4.3-liter gas V6 and the older-design 5.3-liter gas V8 with AFM (Active Fuel Management). The company is also dropping the 6-speed automatic transmission. The announcement was made at the NTEA virtual 2021 Work Truck Show.

The new base engine for the WT and Custom 2022 Chevy Silverado trucks will be the current 2.7-liter turbocharged I4 engine with 8-speed automatic transmission.

It appears the 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss Custom will have turbocharged power. We have tested this 2.7 turbo I4 before, and the engine offers smooth and linear power delivery with lots of low-end torque (similar to a turbo-diesel). This engine has a current rating of 310 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque.

The 5.3-liter V8 with new DFM (Dynamic Fuel Management) will remain, as well as the 6.2-liter V8 and the 3.0-liter Diesel for other trim levels and configurations.
