5. More Powerful and More Fast

Pickup trucks and full-size SUVs are getting more powerful and faster than ever. The 2017 Nissan Armada is a truck-based three-row SUV. It has a new 5.6L V8 engine with 390 hp and 394 lb-ft, which is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. This SUV is capable of a 7.5 second 0-60 MPH acceleration at one mile above sea level (approximately 17% less air density). This is very quick for a large and heavy SUV.

The quickest truck we have ever tested is the 2017 Ford Raptor, which did the 0-60 MPH sprint at one mile above sea level in 6.17 seconds.

4. More Luxury

Pickups and SUVs are getting more and more luxurious. Just take a look at miles of rich leather, elaborate wood accents, panoramic sunroof, entertainment systems, heated and cooled seats, and more. These days, you can get a pickup truck with the same level of materials and craftsmanship as in a high-end luxury sedan.

3. More Hi-Tech Features

Trucks are getting all of the latest driver-aid technologies, safety, and entertainment features. Pickups and SUVs can be configured with adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, collision avoidance, 360-degree camera, and much more.

2. More Capability

Pickups and SUVs are getting ever higher towing and payload ratings. The 2017 Nissan Armada is rated at 8,500 lbs of towing. Midsize trucks are getting into the 7,000 lbs range. Half-ton trucks are well above the 12,000 lbs mark, and heavy duty trucks are pushing past 32,000 lbs of maximum towing.

1. Higher Prices

All these amenities and capability come at a higher retail price. A fully-loaded midsize truck, such as the 2017 GMC Canyon Denali, is pushing $50,000. A fully-optioned half-ton truck, similar to a 2017 Ford F-150 Limited is above $70,000. A fully-outfitted heavy duty truck can push the $85,000 mark.
