Has the Toyota Land Cruiser lost its unstoppable off-road adventure-mobile mojo? Did it get too expensive? These are just some of the questions that Roman Mica discusses in this snowy Rocky Mountain review.
The Land Cruiser still uses a big, powerful, and somewhat thirsty engine. It’s basically the same 5.7L V8 with 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque that also does duty in the Toyota Tundra. The good news about the aging Land Cruiser platform is the availability of a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission. This big truck-based SUV is relatively quick and can tow up to 8,100 lbs. EPA rates the 2017 Land Cruiser at 13 MPG city and 18 MPG on the highway. Roman got an average of 15.1 MPG after several days of mixed driving.
This review also turns into a Range Rover Evoque rescue, as the crew encounters an Evoque that ran into a giant snow bank.
We have done several tests of the new Land Cruiser. These include the Ike Gauntlet extreme towing test, Gold Mine Hill off-road review and our highway MPG loop test.
