How does a 2002 Chevy Silverado HD compare against all the latest trucks and SUVs that we test on the Gold Mine Hill mountain trail? We finally get to find out on this mostly dry run up the mountain (before a major snow storm).

This 2500 HD is powered by a 6.6L Duramax V8, which is all stock with the exception of the aftermarket Airaid intake and an MBRP exhaust systems. The 5-speed Allison transmission is all stock, as is the suspension. This is a crew cab with a short bed (6.5 feet). It has an automatically locking rear differential, but an independent front suspension with no locker. This truck is equipped with a transfer case, so the 4Lo gearing is available. Will the 4Lo be needed this time? I will make it as difficult on the truck as possible. That means taking the first steep rocky section in 2WD (stage 1) and trying to make it around the 90-degree turn (stage 2). However, 4×4 Hi or Lo will be required on the final articulation section (stage 3).

The secret weapon on this truck are the new BFGoodrich T/A KO2 tires. These tires are supposed to have very good grip on rocks and in the dirt. Let’s see how they perform on the Gold Mine Hill trail.

Check out all the off-road fun as I tackle the mountain in the truck and Nathan walks up it!
