We have tested most configurations of the Chevy Colorado and the GMC Canyon, but we have never taken the Colorado 4×4 Z71 Duramax into the snow. How does it handle the high altitude of the Rocky Mountains (at nearly 12,000 feet above sea level) during a December snow storm? This is precisely what we wanted to find out, but this snowy review turned into an adventures drive over an ice-covered high mountain pass with no guardrails. Yikes.
The Chevy Colorado (and GMC Canyon) are the only midsize pickup trucks in the United States to offer a turbo-diesel option, and it is a 2.8L four-cylinder Duramax that makes 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. This 2016 truck and the 2017 model, which is going on sale now, will continue to utilize a 6-speed automatic transmission as the only option. However, you can get this “baby diesel” in 2WD as well as 4×4.
Check out the treacherous mountain pass review below.
