Who is the quickest uphill mover among the latest dually heavy duty trucks? Does the powerful 2015 Ford F-350 trump the Chevy and Ram when it comes to towing a 12,000 travel trailer up a steep grade? TFLtruck went to the launch event of the 2015 Ford Super Duty to find out what the new 6.7L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V8 is really made out of.
Ford provided similarly equipped 2015 Chevy Silverado 3500 Dually and a 2014 Ram 3500 Dually as comparison to the 2015 Ford F-350 Dually King Ranch. Of course, the 2015 Super Duty has the upgraded fuel delivery system to match the new and larger turbocharger among other updates. The result is a class leading 440 horsepower and 860 lb-ft of torque. The Chevy’s Duramax makes 397 hp and 765 lb-ft. And the Ram’s high output Cummins is rated at 385 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque.
The test site is a relatively short (nearly three miles) section of West Virginia highway with a maximum of 7% grade and a peak elevation of approximately 2,700 feet above sea level. Each truck will perform the climb from a rolling start of 50 mph, and accelerate at full-throttle (without exceeding the posted 70 mph speed limit) to get the quickest time up the hill.
