What is the Best Pickup Truck for a New College Student for under $15,000? [Ask TFLtruck]

TFLtruck recently got the following question from Nate F. Actually, there are many great questions built-in within this letter. It boils down to this: what is the best pickup truck for brand new college student for under $15,000?

First, I would like to say that a used pickup truck is a great first vehicle for college! Kent “Mr. Truck” Sundling also thinks so. We have a whole chapter about this in our Truck Nuts Book. A pickup truck can do so many things. It help you or your friends move from the house to the dorm, and out of the dorm.

Can you make money with a truck? This is all up to you. I used to make money doing landscape work, lawn mowing, and delivery during the weekends and over the summer. A pickup truck is a great vehicle to get all these jobs done.

Here is the letter. Nate, thanks for sending it in!

I am a high school senior – going into college next year. I am in the process of looking for a car for college, and my price range is about $10,000-$15,000.

1. I have read a number of articles saying how people can make side cash with their pickup truck. Are these realistic? Could I do them while in college? If possible, would they be worth it considering the gas milage and possible maintenance of the truck?

2. Assuming it’s plausible to make enough money off a truck for it to make sense, what trucks would fit in the price range? I think I’d want a 4×4 (for occasional off-road excursions) but maybe that’s unrealistic? I would prefer a full-size truck, but those usually have higher mileage and are slightly older. What can you suggest about the truck specifically? Reliability is pretty important. I have started to learn about cars and mechanical stuff, but I am no expert. I could probably only do basic things (as of now).

Basically, I would really like a full-size truck, but I would have to convince my parents and my wallet that it could be a good/realistic idea.

The reason why I included our 1985 Chevy K10 project truck is because it’s relatively affordable and easy to maintain (barring any big failures). If you get a regular cab, instead of a crew cab, you can save some money up front. A long bed, like our K10, offers more utility to carry stuff. It is also a 4×4, so you can also have some off-road fun with it.

What do you guy suggest Nate do? Please leave your comment below.

The 2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Is Still Not For Sale, While It’s Waiting For Emissions Certification

The 2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, currently the only half-ton truck sold in the United States with a turbo-diesel engine, is being delayed for sale due to a more rigorous emissions evalution. Deliveries of the 2017 Ram EcoDiesel will have to wait until Ram receives an EPA emissions certification. This is due to the investigation underway by the EPA. FCA is under investigation for, allegedly, adding/creating software to EcoDiesels which alter emissions results under real-world driving conditions.

You can get more information about the EPA’s allegations (here).

We spoke to FCA/Ram and received the following statement. “Demand for this product [Ram EcoDiesel] remains strong. Vehicles have been produced and emissions certification is pending. New orders are not being accepted until emissions certification is received.” – – FCA

While we wait for the results of the EPA investigation(s), we will continue to test the previous year’s Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. Currently, The Fast Lane Truck is testing a 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel for our 2017 Gold Hitch Awards.

Report: Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to Be Body-On-Frame SUVs

Why talk about the upcoming and now officially confirmed Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Jeep Wagoneer on a truck site? That’s because a recent report from AutoNews reports a statement from FCA CEO, Sergio Marchionne, to confirm the Grand Wagoneer (and Wagoneer) as a body-on-frame SUV, not a unibody crossover. The new SUVs will be built at a retooled Warren Truck Assembly plant, near Detroit, which now builds the current-generation Ram 1500.

This news is most welcome, because full-size three-row body-on-frame SUVs are very popular right now. General Motors is having great success with the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL, and Escalade models. Oil and auto industry experts suggest that fuel prices will stay low for longer than initially thought. Some industry insiders suggest that low fuel prices will continue for more than two years from now, barring a catastrophic event. This makes a body-on-frame SUV business case more attractive.

It’s not clear whether the Grand Wagoneer or the Wagoneer will share the frame and chassis components with the upcoming Ram pickup trucks, a modified version of the Jeep Wrangler frame, or another solution.

We will stay on top of this story and let you know all of the details.

EPA Cites Undisclosed Software in Ram 1500 and Jeep EcoDiesel Emissions Cheating Allegations

Ram 1500 EcoDiesel HFE

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) filed an emissions cheating case against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) this week. What are the details surrounding the allegations?

Here is EPA’s notification of violation. The allegation singles out the following vehicles: 2014-2016 Ram 1500s and 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokees that are equipped with the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine. The EPA notification states “alleged violations of the Clean Air Act for installing and failing to disclose engine management software. The undisclosed software results in increased emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the vehicles. The allegations cover roughly 104,000 vehicles.”

Many states (including Colorado) test diesel vehicles for particulates emissions (aka. amount of black smoke), but most states do not require NOx testing and do not test diesel vehicle for nitrogen oxides emissions. Still, NOx emissions are considered harmful and this is tested by the EPA and the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

EPA used additional testing procedures that agency established after the Volkswagen emissions case on Sep 25th, 2015. EPA says that FCA failed to disclose the following Auxiliary Emissions Control Devices (AECD).

  1. Full EGR Shut-Off at Highway Speed
  2. Reduced EGR with Increasing Vehicle Speed
  3. EGR Shut-off for Exhaust Valve Cleaning
  4. DEF Dosing disablement during SCR Adaptation
  5. EGR Reduction due to Modeled Engine Temperature
  6. SCR Catalyst Warm-up Disablement
  7. Alternative SCR Dosing Modes
  8. Use of Load Governor to Delay Ammonia Refill of SCR Catalyst

What do all of these acronyms mean? EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation. DEF is Diesel Exhaust Fluid. SCR is Selective Catalytic Reduction. All these systems work together to reduce harmful emissions.

EPA claims that a combination of these AECDs cause the diesel-powered Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee to behave differently during the standard EPA compliance testing procedures, than during real world operation. Hence, the need for additional testing that EPA performed.

We tested a 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel on our extreme Ike Gauntlet towing test at high elevation and steep grades. Our testing does not include emissions testing.

And here is the Jeep Grand Cherokee on the same Ike Gauntlet run.
