Check out the Nissan Leaf Pickup Truck – Seriously!

Nissan Leaf pickup truck profile
This is a Nissan Leaf Pickup Truck and it is real, not photoshopped – although it is a one-off creation. Nissan’s Technical Center in Stanfield, Arizona has a bounty of creative types who build and test a variety of things for Nissan. The Nissan Leaf Pickup Truck you see here is the result of a project that employees fabricated using components from a Nissan Frontier.

The end result? A functional Nissan Leaf Pickup Truck

“We tried to keep it a secret and be exciting for everybody. But we have visitors and they come and they see that truck and they go straight to ‘what is it?’ and they start looking at it, and it makes great conversation,” said Roland Schellenberg, Nissan Durability & Reliability. This complex was built for, what Nissan says is, “ideal environment to test vehicles for hot weather, heat durability, engine cooling and air conditioner performance.”

The Nissan Leaf Pickup Truck is called “Sparky” and this runabout is built to be used. That pickup truck bed? It’s out of a Nissan Frontier. They cut 10-inches out of the width and about four-inches out of the depth. Cool, no? Better still, the rear bulkhead and (functional) sliding rear glass is out of a Nissan Titan!

“I needed a project for a team building activity so we can bring the team together. We had a need for a truck. Something to drive around, a shop truck,” said Schellenberg.

The Nissan Technical Center is a huge complex with several buildings for development, four mission-specific road courses designed to test vehicle durability, ride comfort and reliability. There is a tremendous, 5.7-mile high-speed oval as well.

“After he (Schellenberg) told us it was going to be the LEAF that we would redo, I went home and stayed up till like four in the morning making all kinds of designs for what would work. We basically got the stock LEAF, and after reviewing a bunch of designs of pickup trucks that we have here at Nissan, we decided to go with a Frontier bed. My main job here is working on rough-road vehicles, rough-road testing. I’m pretty good at taking cars completely apart to the bare frame and putting them back together again to resume testing,” said Moulinet.

Remember: this is a “one-off” design that is not slated for production; however, I kind of like where these lab-coats were going with this idea. Maybe a Nissan Leaf Pickup Truck could fill the gap between the Nissan NV200 Electric and gas-powered small trucks. Personally, I would lift it an inch or two, stiffen the rear coils and add a larger battery pack.

I think it’s cool and so do you.

“Being a slick truck, and not so tough, I see it as a boy – but a boy with a heart. It’s something that we all put together. We all share. So it has a little bit of everybody in there,” said Schellenberg.

Here’s a fun little video from Nissan:

Check out this Chevy Rat Rod Pickup [Photo of the Day]

chevy_truck_rat_rod_frontRat Rod style is still as popular as ever, and pickup trucks play a big part in this movement. This Chevy rat rod pickup does a good job of capturing the essence and the mentality. Rust, patches, low budget ingenuity, and a very loud V8 are all present. How can something this mean looking be also endearing?

chevy_rat_rod_truck_interiorYet, somehow it is street legal, registered, and fully functional as a small pickup truck. This is definitely a one of a kind vehicle.

TFLtruck caught a glimpse of this Chevy at John’s 4×4 in Boulder, CO.

Also, check out this TFLtruck look at an old Dodge project truck, which will NOT be a “rat rod”…

2015 Ford F-150: Caught in the Wild [Spied]

2015 Ford F-150

Ford has a big challenge and opportunity on their hands with the 2015 Ford F-150. The company took a leap forward with all-aluminum body and high-strength steel frame construction. The new trucks will be lighter weight, more capable, and more efficient.

We do not know a lot of specifications about the upcoming F-150 and we haven’t seen them uncovered in the wild until now.

2015_ford_f-150_lariat_spiedWe do know that the new 2.7L EcoBoost V6 makes 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque. Ford says that the 2015 F-150 with the smaller EcoBoost will be rated at 2,250 lbs of maximum payload and 8,500 lbs of maximum towing for the 4×2 model. The numbers go down slightly to 2,160 lbs and 8,400 lbs for the 4×4 model. We also know that the base 3.5L naturally aspirated motor makes 283 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque.  It has a maximum payload of 1,910 pounds and a maximum tow rating of 7,600 pounds.

The starting price for the next F-150 will be $26,616 (including the $1,195 destination charge).

Still, the juicy details like the maximum tow rating for the F-150 and fuel economy numbers are still unknown. TFLtruck received information that the ultimate tow rating will be above 12,000 lbs (likely 12,500 lbs). More details will be announced at the end of this month at the State Fair of Texas.

2016 Mercedes-Benz Vito Van Prototype – Caught on a Mountain Top [Spied]

2016 Mercedes-Benz Vito prototype

Mercedes is known for the Sprinter commercial van in the United States. It is the fifth most popular van in sales and growing fast. However, the company has a large variety of vans for sale in other markets. TFLtruck spied this 2016 Mercedes-Benz Vito prototype testing at high elevation of Colorado and parked on a mountain top.

Mercedes full line of vans includes: the Citan, Viano, Vito, V-Class, and Sprinter. The commercial van and people-mover market is heating up in United States, and it’s possible that Mercedes wants to get into the action. Many smaller commercial vans are arriving on the scene: Chevy City Express, Ford Transit Connect, Nissan NV200, and Ram ProMaster City.

This Vito prototype is in between the small and full-size commercial vans. Perhaps, this Mercedes is counting on this as a unique offering in the market?

The Vito has many configurations and powertrain options. It can even be configured as front or rear wheel drive. All-wheel-drive is possible in left-hand drive configuration. This prototype is a rear-wheel drive variety and has a manual transmission.

Front drive models come with a small 1.6L turbo-diesel four-cylinder with either 88 or 114 horsepower levels. The rear drive can be had with the 2.15L turbo-diesel four-cylinder with 136, 163, and 190 horsepower choices. If this van did come over to United States, then the higher power rear-wheel drive is more likely. TFLtruck also saw this van towing a trailer, so it’s running a comprehensive set of tests.

The Vito also has a range of safety technologies built in, including: Adaptive ESP, Attention assist, Crosswind assist, and Active Parking assist.

2015 Toyota Tundra drops the V6, picks up Integrated Brake Controller [Preview]

2015 Toyota Tundra

Toyota is making some changes to the 2015 Toyota Tundra to better align to market needs and remain competitive.

First, the Tundra gets rid of the 4.0L V6 engine, which was one of the three power train choice for many years. This motor with 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque was not selling very well, so the 2015 Tundra is now all about V8s. You can choose the base 4.6L V8 with 310 hp and 327 lb-ft of torque. However, the far more popular choice among the Tundra customers is the 5.7L V8 with 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are backed up by the 6-speed automatic transmission. The power outputs and driveline components remain the same. This inline with Toyota’s “if it ain’t broke, why fix it” mentality.

Tundra customer had to install aftermarket trailer brake controllers, but the 2015 Tundra will offer an integrated brake controller when you get a 5.7L V8 and Tow Package. The controller is mounted on the lower right (near driver’s knee). And the trailer brake gain and other information is displayed on the center 3.5 inch information screen. This package also includes Tow/Haul mode that adjusts throttle sensitivity and transmission shift mapping. Trailer Sway control is also available.  The 4.6L Tundra still offer pre-wiring kit for aftermarket brake controllers.

The other new item for 2015 is the rear under-seat storage tray that is available on certain double-cab Tundras.

By the way, you can still get the Tundra SR work truck trim with a regular (two-door) cab.
