Toyota surprises everybody with a Hilux Champ 4×4 concept mini truck at the Overland Expo Mountain West 2026. What is it doing inside the Toyota booth? We have all the details. Let’s dig in!
This is a concept pickup truck that Toyota’s mobility group is showing to gauge enthusiast and consumer interest in such an off-road (off highway) vehicle. Toyota is not making any official announcements at this time on whether this will or will not be sold in the U.S. Still, it has many very interesting features.
The Toyota Hilux Champ is a commercial pickup truck that is currently available for sale in Thailand, Philippines, and other countries. The one you see here is from the Philippines. This concept is a bit different. It uses a shorter new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ chassis as its platform. The shorter wheelbase offers a better breakover angle and overall ground clearance.
While the commercial pickup truck may be powered by a 2.4L turbo-diesel engine, this concept has a 4.0L V6 gasoline engine under its hood. It’s mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It has a 4Hi/4Lo transfer case, a solid rear axle with a locking differential, and a lifted suspension. The engineer told us that the front suspension mounts are the same as on a 3rd-generation Toyota Tacoma.
Many of the parts you see here are interchangeable with some other Toyota vehicles. The enterior has a modern look, but it’s very simple. There is very little sound insulation. There is a vinyl floor and vinyl seats. However, it appears to have a climate control system with AC and power windows. The interior is comfortable and functional, but the driver’s seat is a little too low for my liking. The sitting position is similar to the 3rd-generation Tacoma.
Toyota says a Hilux Champ concept may have up to 1,700 lbs of payload and 5,500 lbs of towing capacity. These are great numbers for a vehicle this size.
Overseas, a Hilux Champ commercial 2WD pickup truck can be purchased for an equivalent of $15,000.
Could Toyota sell it in the United States as an off-highway / off-road utility vehicle to compete against the Polaris Ranger XD and the Can-Am Defender HD? Consider that these utility side-by-sides with enclosed cabs and climate control system start around $40,000.
If Toyota wanted to compete, they would have to bring a Hilux Champ enclosed side-by-side at a lower price point. This could be very possible if you consider this vehicle’s overseas pricing.
