The Ford Ranger Raptor is our second most liked pickup truck of all time (the first being our 2021 Ram TRX). Nonetheless, the time has come to trade our Ranger Raptor in for something new. We have owned this Ranger for nearly 14 months, which is longer than we keep most long-term test vehicles. We have done everything we wanted to do with this Ranger. Roman surprises me with the choice of the new truck. Check it out!
The Ranger Raptor does not have many weaknesses. It’s also a great value when you consider that most of its competitors cost $3,000 – $11,000 more! This Ranger is very quick. It’s fund to drive. It’s spacious enough for four people to sit with relative comfort. It’s a great off-roader. It has front and rear locking differentials and Live Valve FOX shocks. It can handle some slow rock crawling or fast desert running. It has 1,380 lbs of payload capacity.
The only negative being that it is rated at a maximum of 5,510 lbs of trailer towing capacity. It’s a stable and confident towing machine, but you cannot tow very heavy with it. The relatively soft rear springs squat a lot when you hook up a heavy trailer.
We pull up to the dealership, the garage door opens, and Roman shows me our next long-term test truck. It’s a 2025 Ford F-150 Tremor with a 5.0L Coyote V8 engine. This trade requires us to pay nearly $10,000 in addition to the trade value of our 2024 Ranger Raptor that has around 9,600 miles on the odometer.
The F-150 Tremor we just got is a capable and fun truck. It has around 1,700 lbs of payload and 9,900 lbs of trailer capacity. This is a base F-150 Tremor without many options. It does have a towing package. However, it does NOT have the fancy 4WD transfer case with 4-Auto. It also does not have a TORSEN front licking differential.
It does have 4HI, 4LO, and a selectable locking rear differential. It’s an F-150, so it has a spacious full-size cabin and a 5.5-foot bed. We will be able to do a bit more with this Tremor because it will allow us to pull heavier trailers.
Also, Ford Performance offers a Whipple supercharger kit for the F-150 5.0L V8. It costs close to $13,000, including the dealer installation. However, it bumps the power from 400 horsepower to 700 HP, and it’s covered by Ford’s warranty. This is a tempting but expensive option.
