It’s time to put our new 2025 Chevy Silverado HD Trail Boss truck to a serious off-road test. Is it really a “Trail Boss”, and is it worth nearly $3,400 for this off-road trim? Let’s dig in!

The HD Trail Boss is a new trim for this year. It join the Chevy Colorado Trail Boss and the Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss trucks in the lineup. The heavy-duty version is based on a Silverado 2500 HD with a Z71 4×4 package. The HD Trail Boss package is primarily a cosmetic package and it is very good looking. However, the HD Trail Boss also comes with new BFGoodrich KO3 all-terrain tires that are mounted on stylish 20-inch wheels. Tires are very important on any terrain, and we take this truck to the RAM Off-Road pack near Colorado Springs, CO for a thorough test.

Big thanks to our friends at Granger Warranty (factory backed extended warranty) for helping with this off-road video test.

This is a large and heavy pickup truck that is still meant to do a lot of work. This Silverado HD crew cab has a maximum payload rating of just over 3,100 lbs. It also has a gooseneck trailer tow rating of 19,100 lbs. The tires are aired up to over 63 PSI in order to handle heavy loads. We do not need so much pressure for an off-road test. This is why we are using our Thor’s Lightning tire deflation/inflation system in order to air down and get the maximum amount of traction.

The HD Trail Boss does not get a suspension lift over a standard HD 4×4 truck. It is equipped with Rancho shocks, and it has an automatically-locking G80 rear differential. This truck has 4LO (low-range four wheel drive gearing), an Off-Road driving mode, and hill descent control. The Tail Boss package also comes with blacked out exterior accents and badging (as well as red front tow hooks).

Kase and I take up and down several obstacles. It’s not easy to maneuver this large truck (160 inch wheelbase), but we manage. These all-terrain tires are very good. Overall, we are impressed with this truck’s capability, but I think the additional $3,400 for the Trail Boss package is not worth it. It may be worth it to you if you like the style it provides, but if you only care about functional changes – you could stay with the base Z71 package and swap the all-terrain tires as you need it.
