Ford announces that a “heavy-duty” version of the 2026 Ford Ranger is coming, and it will be called the Ranger Super Duty. There is everything we know so far. Let’s dig in!
This new Ford Ranger is said to be able to tow up to 4,500 kg (or 9,920 lbs). It will have a GVWR of 4,500 kg or 9,920 lbs. The GCWR is rated at 8,000 lbs or 17,637 lbs. Some of these numbers are approaching full-size truck territory.
If you are confused. Don’t worry. This announcement comes to us from Ford Australia (not Ford USA). The Ford Ranger was Australia’s most popular vehicle in 2023. Midsize pickup truck (or ute) segment is very important to the Australian and other world markets. Introducing more versions of the Ranger makes sense there.
Traditionally, the Ford Ranger, the Toyota Hilux, and many other pickup trucks (or utes) in Australia have heavier payload capacities than their midsize truck versions in the U.S. The Ranger Super Duty takes it up to another level.

The 2026 Ford Ranger Super Duty will be an interesting beast. It will have way more towing capacity than any traditional midsize pickup truck we know. It will have Ford F-250 levels of payload capacity and a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) that is nearing that of the heaviest F-150 you can buy in the U.S.
How did this Ranger Super Duty came to be? I am guessing it has something to do with the upcoming Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid that is also coming to Australia soon. The Ranger plug-in carries a heavy battery and an electric motor, in addition to its internal combustion engine. The Ranger plug-in hybrid likely has a heavier chassis and suspension system that can be used for something like the Ranger Super Duty.
Update: Nov 19, 2024 5:00pm PST. We reached out to a Ford U.S. representative and got the following statement.
“We have a wide range of trucks available today for North American customers to meet almost any need, from the Ford Maverick to F-Series Super Duty. There are no current plans to offer a Ranger Super Duty in North America.“
