Chevy Unlocks ‘Sidewinder’ (Crabwalk) Functionality For The Silverado EV RST

New trucks will come with it baked in, while 2024 models will get it through an OTA update

Finally, the Chevy Silverado EV gets a feature formerally reserved for GMC’s electric trucks.

As absolutely ridiculous and overwrought you may consider the GMC Hummer EV to be, you can’t deny CrabWalk is one of its coolest features. The notion of both wheels steering in the same direction in addition to your typical rear-wheel steering setup makes the ginormous truck much easier to maneuver, and it’s a feature that filtered down to the new Sierra EV as well. Weirdly, though, the Chevrolet Silverado EV did not ship with this feature…until now, at least. Now, the Silverado EV RST will get its own version called Sidewinder Mode.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “Shouldn’t Chevy have shipped the Silverado EV with that drive mode in the first place?”…well, I certainly can’t argue with you. Nevertheless, it’s a feature that will ship with the updated 2025 Silverado EV RST model (not the WT or the LT, it seems). For those who already picked up a 2024 version, don’t fret: You’ll also get Sidewinder Mode as part of an over-the-air update .

Like its GMC siblings, Sidewinder enables the Chevy Silverado EV RST to drive with both front and rear wheels pointed in the same direction, at speeds up to 20 mph. Also like the GMC trucks, you’ll have to select the feature through the infotainment screen — Andre shows how exactly to access it in the Sierra EV (skip to the 21:05 timestamp in this video).

While you’ll now be able to get what is effectively CrabWalk in your Chevy Silverado EV so you don’t have to buy a GMC, it still won’t come cheaply. The 2025 Silverado EV RST starts out at $89,395 for the 2SP model with about 390 miles of range. Another 3SP variant, with a 460-mile ‘Max Range’ battery pack, will set you back $97,895.
