Take a look at this “big” truck we just ordered! It’s a bobbed Duece 4×4! More specifically, it’s an early 1990s M35A3 “Duece and a Half” that is refreshed and bobbed by Boyce Equipment in Utah. These military trucks were produced by a variety of manufacturers in the U.S. and around the world, and the last of these trucks were made in the 1990s.
These trucks were called Duece and a Half because they were rated to haul 2.5 tonnes (or around 5,000 lbs) in off-road situations. Basically, they had to reliably haul this amount of weight over terrain where there are no roads. There were also 5-ton versions of these trucks.
Most of these trucks are now gone or out of service. Companies such as Boyce Equipment get these surplus vehicles, refurbish them, make them more capable, and more friendly as everyday vehicles. We had our eye out for one of these trucks for some time. We are ready to pounce!
The truck we selected has around $10,000+ of additional options, but it still comes out to a total price of just over $45,000.
It just so happens that we purchased a new 2024 Toyota Tacoma crew cab 4×4 TRD Off-road earlier this year for $45,300. This Tacoma did not have all the options. It did not have a larger infotainment screen. It did not have a disconnecting front sway bar. It did not have a trailer brake controller.
Will this bobbed Duece be as fun, as capable, and as useful as a modern midsize pickup truck for the same money? We will find our soon!
