Ford is making news this week by announcing that the company will retool its Oakville Ontario Canada factory complex (near Toronto) to produce Ford Super Duty trucks with “future multi-energy technology”. What does this mean and when will this happen? Let’s dig in!
The announcement says that Ford is aiming to invest upward of $3 Billion in order to expand the Super Duty truck production and add more powertrain options in the process. Ford says the retooled factory could have capacity to produce up to 100,000 Super Duty trucks annually.
“Super Duty is a vital tool for businesses and people around the world and, even with our Kentucky Truck Plant and Ohio Assembly Plant running flat out, we can’t meet the demand,” Ford CEO Jim Farley said in a statement. “At the same time, we look forward to introducing three-row electric utility vehicles.“
We are not sure which three-row electric utility vehicle the CEO is referring to, but we are guessing that it will be something like a 2027 Ford Expedition EV. Ford currently produces the Super Duty along with the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator at their U.S.-based facilities. It seems reasonable to assume that the retooled Oakville Assembly complex could produce the heavy-duty pickup trucks and full-size SUVs as well. The new Oakville facility is expected to come online in 2026.
Ford also says that they plan to expand their V8 engine production in Windsor Ontario and create more jobs. The Windsor Engine Plant currently produces the 7.3L Godzilla V8 gasoline engine. This makes us speculate that there is a potential for the 2026 Ford Super Duty to be equipped with a 7.3L gas V8 electric hybrid powertrain. We see a lot of benefits of such a setup.
I used to own a 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid for about two years. This gas/electric was very quick, powerful, more efficient in the city, and equipped with a 7.2 kW power export inverter. We used this system to charge electric cars, power a home, run a welder, and many other tools. Such an option in the Super Duty could bring a lot of benefits.
