Here is the world debut of the first-ever 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Black. It’s a limited edition factory-customized electric pickup truck. Ford plans to only build 2,000 of these Platinum Black pickups. This truck also shows some 2024 model year updates and changes that are coming to all 2024 F-150 Lightnings. Let’s dig into all of the details, easter eggs, price, and availability.
2024 Ford F-150 Lightning
This special edition of the truck joins the rest of the Lightning lineup. The 2024 lineup will include the base Pro, XLT, Lariat, Platinum, and this new Platinum Black.
Let’s take a look at the exterior of the Platinum Black model. It comes with a matte black finish full-body wrap. The truck comes this way when it’s delivered at the dealership. The base color is the Agate Black gloss paint. The roof, side mirrors, charge door logo, and door handles remain in the gloss paint finish. Everything else is in matte wrap. The Platinum Black edition includes power-retractable side steps, a spray-in bedliner, and a soft tonneau cover.
The front LED light signature bar has a smoked finish to make it appear darker when the light is off. The LED still comes through loud and clear when it’s on. The truck rides on 22-inch Platinum wheels that are blacked out and black lug nuts. Ford has removed the faux passenger-side charge door. The passenger front fender now has an F-150 logo. All logos on the Platinum Black truck are blacked out. The rear bedside “Lightning” badge is now a reflective decal. It’s barely visible during the day, but it can come to life at night when a light source hits it.
On the inside, this special edition has two serialized plaques. It shows an x,xxx/2,000 number. One of the plaques is inside the front driver’s door jam. The second larger plaque is on the inside of the frunk lid.
The chassis and the mechanicals remain the same. The Platinum Black still uses a two-motor AWD/4WD system with a total of 580 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. The 131 kWh extended range battery powers the truck for an EPA-estimated 300 miles of total range. (This estimated range is for the heavier Platinum model, other Lightning trim levels have a longer estimated range of up to 320 miles for 2023 models.)
On the inside, there is a luxurious black Nirvana leather interior. It’s still a crew cab that seats five. There are two additional “Lightning” decals on the rear section of the panoramic sunroof.
Feature Improvements
The Platinum Black edition will get the latest Blue Cruise 1.2 hands-free driver assist system. It includes automated lane changes and in-lane adjustments due to traffic. Other versions of the Lightning that have the appropriate Blue Cruise hardware and sensors will be able to OTA (over-the-air) update to the latest version.
The Platinum Black introduces the Walk Away Locking feature from the Mustang Mach-E to the Lightning truck lineup.
The 2024 F-150 Lightning pickup trucks will offer the ability to use the ProPower onboard system without turning the truck on. The truck still needs to get unlocked with proper authentication, but the electricity export feature can then be enabled by hitting the “green” button on the outlet cover under the frunk or inside the bed.
Finally, the 2024 Lightning will automatically switch into Tow/Haul mode if you plug in a trailer wire plug into the 7-pin connector on the truck. It’s just another small convenience feature that can improve the user’s experience.
Most or all of these new features or feature improvements will be OTA updateable to existing Lightning trucks.
