We Drove Our Ram TRX Hard for 12,000+ Miles – Here’s How It Held Up

We changed and analyzed the engine oil twice.

ram trx long term review towing drag race oil analysis

We have owned our Ram TRX for 14 months and over 12,000 miles. We ran countless drag races with it, 0-60 MPH accelerations, and towing trips. We took the truck to Moab, Utah several times to hit the trails, and we took it off-road in the Colorado Rocky Mountains as well. We changed and analyzed the engine oil twice. Here is how it held up over the long term.

This TRX has given us zero problems. Yes, there was an instance during one of the drag races when the truck went into a “low power” mode, but a simple ignition cycle resolved the issue and our TRX knocked off another consistent 4.5 seconds 0-60 MPH acceleration.

This TRX has a more basic “Level 1” interior and it’s holding up very well after more than a year of use. The large metal TRX VIN plate on the center console can get hot in direct sunlight, so you may have to watch your elbow. This is a minor complaint. The 12-inch vertical screen is still very useful, but it’s getting dated when compared to the latest infotainment system from the 2022 Ford, GM, and Toyota pickup trucks. While the TRX offers some hard buttons for the climate control system, the heated steering wheel and heated steering wheel controls are software only. You need to dig down a couple of menus to find them. Note: our TRX is a 2021 model and it is NOT equipped with the latest Uconnect 5 system that current 2022 TRX trucks come with.

The Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT tires have been excellent. We rotated them twice (once for each of the oil changes). They are barely showing any wear after many drag race launches. They offer very good grip in the snow and the ice as we showed recently in a TRX vs F-150 Raptor tug-of-war and snowy off-road reviews.

Here is the oil analysis report.

The 6.2L supercharged V8 in our TRX is still very healthy, according to this report. The magnesium and boron content went up in the second oil sample, but the folks at the Blackstone Labs are still not very concerned.

We will do another long-term video review soon. Here is a 6-month review video below.
