DIY-ers can add their own pieces to the new Ford Maverick, with a 3D printer and some know-how.
There’s a lot to like about the 2022 Ford Maverick, even when you’re speaking generally about the truck and its packaging. One of the neatest elements, though, is the FITS system the Blue Oval incorporated into its new small truck. The Ford Integrated Tether System allows owners to add in accessories provided by the automaker — in itself completely typical of every other vehicle out there. However, unlike most other vehicles, you can actually fit your own pieces of kit if you have access to a 3D printer.
That’s been the game plan since before the Maverick launched, but Ford now makes the process a bit easier by virtue of these publicly-available CAD files. Those files provide the geometry for the eight FITS slots found around the Maverick, onto which you can craft pretty much anything you want that will fit.
The possibilities are endless
Ford shows off your standard dividers, trash bins or brand-themed cable holders. But others have come up with FITS-mounted cupholders, sunglass holders and more. Publishing the base files for owners to build on adds a degree of customization — one that may help drive the larger community with quirkier and interesting ideas. Side note: This isn’t FITS-related per se, but someone put a dummy seat ejector plate in that small cubby next to the Maverick’s infotainment screen.
If you want to give it a shot, you can download the FITS slot geometry files from Ford’s website.
