Ford’s eSourceBook has a lot of information about the upcoming all-new 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. We already know most of it, but one more crucial piece of information now comes into focus. It’s the curb weight of the new all-electric pickup truck and its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Turns out the F-150 Lightning may not be as heavy as some of us expected. This is important because it gives us an idea about how quick the new truck will accelerate, brake, and how it will handle. Here are all the details.
We have access to the F-150 Lightning eSourceBook thank to the F150gen14.com forum.
2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
The new Lightning truck comes only as a crew cab 4×4 with a 5.5-foot bed. While it has the cab and the bed that are pretty much identical to a standard non-EV F-150, the chassis underneath is unique. It’s a new frame structure that house the battery pack and accommodate front and rear electric motors and independent suspension all-around.
The 2022 F-150 Lightning Pro with the smaller standard-range 98 kWh battery pack has a base curb weight of 6,171 lbs and a GVWR of 8,250 lbs. It also puts the base Lightning payload at just over the promised 2,000 lbs.
The Lightning with the larger 131 kWh extended-range battery has a curb weight of 6,590 lbs, according to the document (see below). This one has a GVWR of 8,550 lbs – which makes is a “heavy-duty” class 2b pickup truck.
The Lightning’s base curb weight is surprisingly low for a battery-laden pickup truck. Here is how it compares to some of the other trucks.
Curb Weight | Payload | Power | Range | |
Ford F-150 Hybrid (crew cab 4×4) | 5,642 lbs | 1,708 lbs | 430 hp | ~700 miles |
Ford F-150 Lightning (standard range) | 6,171 lbs | 2,000+ lbs | 426 hp | 230 miles |
Ford F-150 Lightning (extended range) | 6,590 lbs | 1,800+ lbs | 563 hp | 300 miles |
Rivian R1T (large pack) | 6,772 lbs | 1,760 lbs | 835 hp | 314 miles |
GMC Hummer EV (edition 1) | 9,046 lbs | 1,300 lbs | 1,000 hp | 329 miles |
The F-150 Lightning with the larger extended range battery weighs about 1,000 lbs more than a comparable Ford F-150 Powerboost hybrid pickup truck. This configuration of the Lightning also weighs just a bit less than a base Rivian R1T with the large battery pack. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV with its largest battery option is in a whole other category.
