The upcoming 2022 Ram 1500 and HD trucks will offer a Trailer 360 View feature with an optional trailer camera system. Ram announces several new Ram 1500, heavy-duty, and chassis cab truck options and features during the company’s 2021 virtual NTEA work truck show presentation.
As you can see in the images, the new system uses four additional cameras that can be mounted on a box trailer to put together a composite bird’s-eye view of the trailer and display it on a screen inside the truck. This works in much the same way as the current truck 360-degree view, but it does require an additional camera kit with wires, camera mounts, cable mounts, and a control module. This new Trailer 360 View system can support trailers up to 53-feet in length. Yes, this system can theoretically support box trailers as long as the one behind a semi truck.
Ram made a lengthy presentation at the virtual NTEA show to describe all the latest options and features for the 2022 model year trucks. The updates include the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic truck lineup that continues into the next model year. These DS-generation Ram 1500 trucks will use the existing 3.6L V6 and 5.7L V8 engines. All the latest 1500 and heavy-duty trucks will have the ability to provide N95 level of cabin air filtration.
Ram did not announce any new powertrain options or specification changes for the 2022 model year trucks at this time. Here are specs and weight ratings based on the current 2021 model year specification.
Some other technology upgrades include a rear camera mirror feature that is available on a variety of Ram heavy-duty trucks. There are some changes to how the Power Take Off (PTO) operates on commercial and heavy-duty trucks. The company also provided a guide to the latest trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and electrical interface systems. There is also an update about the Ram 1500 snowplow prep package that provides a smoother integration with the truck’s driver assistance features.
Finally, Ram hinted at some significant changes to the 2022 Ram ProMaster van lineup. These changes include a switch to the latest electrical architecture and powertrain upgrades. Ram did not elaborate more about this, but said that more details are coming at the Fall 2021 NTEA show and the 2022 ProMaster is expected to go on sale in late Q4 2021.
Does it mean that Ram is working on a gas/electric hybrid or an all-electric version of the ProMaster van for the North American market? We do not know for sure at this time.
We do know that Ford, GM, Mercedes-Benz, and many other manufacturers already announced their plans for all-electric commercial vans. Many of these vans are going into production and sale within the next year. Thanks to a TFLtruck viewer – Wo Xie – we have an image of a 2022 Ram ProMaster prototype van testing in public. It’s unknown what powertrain or features this van is testing.
