A recent report by Bloomberg suggests that General Motors will preview or debut an electrified Chevy pickup truck at the virtual 2021 CES show next month. GM CEO, Marry Barra, is expected to make a keynote speech at the virtual conference on January 12, 2021. There is no official confirmation yet about which vehicle or vehicles will be shown at the virtual gathering. The report also does not make it clear whether the electrified Chevrolet pickup truck will be a concept of the rumored EV truck or a plug-in hybrid version of a truck that is similar to the current Chevy Silverado 1500.
GM recently showed a preview of an all-electric Chevy truck at an investor/financial meeting. This truck appears to be an all-electric pickup with a chassis and body style that is similar to the official GMC Hummer EV truck.
While a more affordable all-electric pickup truck will be very important for General Motors within the next couple of years, a plug-in gas/electric hybrid could be a more reasonable stepping stone. Ford has talked about an all-electric F-150 that is coming in mid-2022. Ford has already started selling a 2021 F-150 Hybrid (although this is not a plug-in hybrid). Rivian R1T all-electric pickup is expected to hit the market in June 2021. The Tesla Cybertruck is still expected to hit the market by the end of 2021.
We will have to wait and see what Ram, Toyota, and Nissan are planning in terms of electrified trucks.
