Thanks to a TFLtruck viewer (Arturo), we get another close look at the latest 2022 Toyota Tundra prototype. This truck is driving up the Pikes Peak mountain road in Colorado for some high altitude testing. Yes, this is the same road as used for the International Pikes Peak Hillclimb.

This appears to be a testing prototype similar to one that was seen in Arizona several months ago. It is a crew cab truck with a short (approximately 5.5-ft bed). The prototype appears to have the same cab as the current truck. We think this is temporary, and the next-generation Tundra will use an updated version of the cab.

There is a rumor that Toyota will introduce and officially debut the next 2022 Tundra in February 2021. This may happen during the Super Bowl LV 2021 on Feb 7, 2021 as a commercial spot and/or at the 2021 Chicago Auto Show that is currently set for Feb 13-21st. Naturally, the official debut timing heavily depends on a million factors and is subject to event cancelations due to public health guidelines.

Toyota had their time to design, develop, and engineer a highly competitive truck for its next generation. We anticipate this truck to be powered by at least two twin-turbo V6 gas engines. This is unofficial information. We expect a “standard” twin turbo V6, and a high performance gas V6/electric hybrid with around 450 horsepower. There is another unofficial source that claims that a Tundra Hybrid will be capable of 30+ MPG.

We will have to wait and see exactly what Toyota has in store for its new full-size truck. Will they also show an electric Tundra with a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain? We may need to wait until next year to find out.
