Ford Should Build a 2021 F-150 Tremor Off-Road Truck: Here Is Why (Op/Ed)

Bridge the gap between FX4 and the Raptor.

We have new 2021 Ford F-150 pricing guide and source book leaks, and we can learn exactly what the new F-150 FX4 package is all about. You can get all of the new FX4 off-road package details at TFLoffroad.com. The new FX4 package add a Rock Crawl drive selector mode, but no suspension lift of crawl control feature for the F-150. With the next-gen Ford Raptor not far off, will the F-150 FX4 package be enough to compete against the likes of the new Ram 1500 Rebel and Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss? This is why I think Ford should consider building an F-150 Tremor off-road truck.

Ford F-150 Tremor

The newest crop of half-ton trucks all come with some sort of an off-road package. It’s equipment that takes a basic 4×4 truck to the next level with special suspension tuning, all-terrain tires, skid plates, and more. Ford’s FX4 has answered the call for years.

However, trucks such as the Ram Rebel and the Chevy Trail Boss add a suspension lift and very aggressive tires to the mix. Both (the Ram and the Chevy/GMC trucks) offer a 1-inch or 2-inch suspension lifts from the factory. Both offer their own version of the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac all-terrain tires.

The current F-150 FX4 does not offer a suspension lift or partner name-brand shocks. Ford Performance offers a lift / leveling kit for the F-150 with FOX shocks, but it does not come as part of the FX4 package. There are other huge benefits with the FX4 package. First, it’s available on virtually every trim level of the F-150. It is also relatively affordable with a starting price of around $905. The current FX4 offers: Rear locking differential, Hill Descent Control, tuned shocks, skid plates, and slightly more off-road worthy tires.

The new 2021 F-150 FX4 package still offers all that, but now also include Rock Crawl driving mode. This changes the transmission shifting schedule, traction control, and more. Ford’s Trail Control – slow speed off-road cruise control – is reportedly not part of the F-150 FX4. This is why I would argue that Ford should build an F-150 Tremor package. Give this Tremor a factory suspension lift, different shocks, aggressive tires, and the Trail Control system. This would be a truck that directly competes against the Ram Rebel, the Trail Boss, the GMC Sierra AT4, and the Toyota TRD Pro. I am not listing the Nissan Pro-4X in this group because the Pro-4X does not offer a factory suspension lift.

I don’t think this would encroach on the Raptor sales, since the Ford Raptor takes several levels higher with wide stance, more suspension travel, high-end suspension, more power, more aggressive design and more.
