Modern trucks (2020 Ford Super Duty) offer a dizzying amount of choice. Not to worry! TFLtruck has your back. In this TFL’s Expert Buyer’s Guide we show you all four powertrain combinations and how they perform in the real world. This will help you decide which Super Duty fits your needs in the best possible way.
Ford Super Duty
The 2020 Ford Super Duty F-250 starts at $33,705. This is a regular cab with a long bed and 2WD. The STX appearance package for the XL trucks adds chrome and $1,825 to the price. This guide is not about all the trim levels or option pricing. This guide is focused on the engine / transmission choices based on years of our testing.
6.2L Gas V8 and 6-Speed Automatic
The F-250 and F-350 get a carryover 6.2-liter gas V8 as the standard engine. It is rated at 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, and comes mated to a six-speed heavy duty automatic transmission.
6.2L Gas V8 and 10-Speed Automatic
The existing 6.2-liter V8 can also be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s available on a selection of F-250 and F-350 trucks. This is a more rare powertrain combination that we have not tested yet. It is available in F-350 single rear wheel and dually trucks.
Here are all the 2020 Ford Super towing rating / charts.
7.3L V8 and 10-Speed Automatic
Beyond the 6.2-liter unit, there is Ford’s brand new 7.3-liter gas “Godzilla” V8. The larger displacement engine is a $2,045 option in the F-250 and a $1,705 option on the F-350 over the base engine. It puts out 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to Ford’s ten-speed automatic transmission.
6.7L Diesel V8 and 10-Speed Automatic
Finally, there’s the venerable 6.7-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V8 at the top of the range. It’s been updated for 2020. The third generation of this engine is putting out 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque — currently a class-leading hp & torque numbers when compared against the likes of GM and Ram’s heavy duty trucks. Like the gas engines, the diesel also comes mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission. However, unlike the gas engines, it’s an expensive option over the base trucks. The Power Stroke diesel is a $10,495 option on either F-250 or F-350 over the base gas V8. As with the previous models, the F-450 is only available with the diesel engine.
A diesel F-250 Tremor clocked in a surprising 0-60 MPH acceleration of 6.75 seconds when using 4WD. This is the quickest factory heavy duty truck acceleration we have measured at one mile above sea level.
The big diesel also has another trick up its sleeve. It can also be very fuel efficient.
