Will General Motor revive the HUMMER name as an all-electric GMC truck sub-brand? This may just be the case according to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
2022 GMC HUMMER Electric?
The report states that GM enlisted the star power of Lebron James (@KingJames) to make a special news announcement about an electric GM truck during the Super Bowl LIV on February 2, 2020. This just about three weeks away.
The report suggests that the HUMMER name will be an off-road focused sub-brand under the the GMC premium truck lineup. The report pegs the production return of the HUMMER name at late 2021/early 2022. This is about the same time, as Tesla is promising to deliver first production Cybertrucks.
General Motors made a recent investment into the Detroit-Hamtramck manufacturing plant with a plan to build electric vehicles there. No more details are yet known.
Considering that batteries and electric motors are still very pricy, it makes sense that GM’s electric move will be handled by the premium GMC brand.
We reached out to GMC for further comment. We hope to get more details soon.
[Update:] GM officially has no comment on this.
