It looks like a bit of a disaster scene, doesn’t it?
A train carrying several new cars and trucks derailed outside Caliente, Nevada Wednesday, creating some remarkable carnage in the process. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear there were any injuries, according to Jalopnik‘s report. However, the wreck did take out some shiny new examples of the Jeep Gladiator.
The crash happened just after 9:00 A.M. about 30 miles from the Utah border, or about 100 miles from St. George, Utah. Lincoln County, Nevada Sheriff Kerry Lee said the road connecting Elgin and Carp, Nevada are closed for the next 7-10 days as crews remove construction equipment, train cars and debris, according to this Fox 13 News report.
There isn’t much more information on the derailment at the moment. The Sheriff’s Office did not provide much direct information. Lee said it was the “most spectacular mess he has seen.” Here is what the Sheriff’s Office posted to their Facebook page:
There’s no information currently available on what caused the derailment. Whether it was human error or something beyond the conductor’s control remains a mystery.
Not just Gladiators
Some of the Gladiators shown above met their end in the crash. However, there were also brand new Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras on the train too. You can see this particular GMC Sierra 1500 Denali just sitting alongside the remains of the train. Its passenger-side fender was turn off and the Silverado behind it landed on the roof.
There were a few Wranglers in the train as well. This white one appears to have managed quite well. Then again, we can only see one side of it. As for the total extent of the damage? Who knows. Clearly, some of these cars are complete write-offs. Maybe the ones inside the cars are salvageable? We can only hope.
At any rate, this crash isn’t good news if you’re waiting to take delivery of your new Jeep Gladiator.
