Chevy Is Offering a Fix to Stop Colorado ZR2 Airbags Unexpectedly Deploying Off-Road (News)

After investigating the issue, Chevy is offering a solution to Colorado ZR2 owners to keep their airbags from deploying off-road.

Back in September, we covered news that owners of Chevy Colorado ZR2 dealt with unnecessary side airbag deployment when they went off-road. That’s obviously a problem, as the Colorado ZR2 was designed to head off-road. Now, though, the company’s offering a solution. A GM spokesperson confirmed today that it notified dealers to recalibrate the airbags to be less sensitive to sudden, unwarranted deployment. More specifically, this solution comes as part of a “customer-satisfaction initiative to recalibrate the threasholds for the roof mounted side air bags for ZR2 owners.”

According to Chevrolet’s communications team, there have been 11 reports of ZR2 owners whose side airbags went off while off-roading. In those specific cases, Chevrolet is offering to reimburse customers for the cost of repairs. The one caveat is that, “the event data was available to confirm the incident”. Chevrolet investigated the problem as reports came in, and worked to understand what was going on.

This fix comes following stories like the one over at Jalopnik, where a reader sent in a tip of a Pennsylvania truck driver whose airbags went off unexpectedly. In that case, it happened on a fairly tame-looking off-road trail. Kelley Blue Book also experienced the same issue, where the side airbags deployed.
