Which is the most fuel efficient full-size V8 truck out there? Efficiency may not be the deciding factor for a truck purchase, but nobody likes to pay too much at the fuel pump.
The newest half-ton trucks continue to roll out for the 2019 model year, and we are learning more and more details about them. The latest 2019 Silverado numbers are out, and this gives us an opportunity to compare the EPA ratings among V8 trucks from each manufacturer.
The EPA (fueleconomy.gov) website only has data for the 2019 Silverado with the 5.3L V8 / 6-speed automatic transmission. However, Chevrolet released their own EPA cycle estimates (see below). Note that we still do not know the Chevy 2.7L turbo I4 or the 3.0L I6 diesel fuel economy ratings. We are talking solely about V8 trucks here.
2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 : 5.3L V8, 6-speed auto : 15/21/17 MPG
2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 : 5.3L V8, 8-speed auto : 17/23/19 MPG (includes Dynamic Fuel Management – DFM)
2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 : 6.2L V8, 10-speed auto: 16/20/17 MPG (includes Dynamic Fuel Management – DFM)
Here is how the new Chevy stacks up against competition.
The Ford F-150 5.0L V8 utilizes the 10-speed automatic transmission to get the most out of every gallon of fuel. Ram uses cylinder deactivation and a new 8-speed automatic to improve economy. Ram eTorque mild-hybrid MPG ratings are not yet announced.
Nissan uses direct fuel injection and a 7-speed automatic, and Toyota is still a bit old school when it comes to fuel economy. Which v8 half-ton truck is the most frugal on fuel? Here is the breakdown.
- There is a tie for first place.
2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 | 5.3L V8 / 8-speed auto | 17/23/19 MPG |
2018 Ford F-150 | 5.0L V8 / 10-speed auto | 17/23/19 MPG |
2018 Nissan Titan | 5.6L V8 / 7-speed auto | 15/21/18 MPG |
2019 Ram 1500 | 5.7L V8 / 8-speed auto | 15/22/17 MPG |
2018 Toyota Tundra | 4.6L V8 / 6-speed auto | 15/19/16 MPG |
