Which new 2018 one-ton truck can handle the world’s toughest XXL towing test and a 28,500 lbs trailer with more confidence, efficiency, and comfort? Will it be the 2018 Ford F350 and its updated 6.7L Power Stroke V8 and 450 hp and 935 lb-ft of torque or the 2018 Ram 3500 HD with the latest high output 6.7L Cummins I6 and 385 hp and 930 lb-ft?
The diesel torque wars are alive and well, as both of these trucks have increased power ratings for 2018. The Cummins in the Ram was bumped up to 930 lb-ft of torque from 900 lb-ft. The Power Stroke in the Ford gained 10 horsepower and 10 lb-ft of torque for a segment leading power rating. Both of these trucks have a maximum towing rating of over 30,000 lbs, and we are taking this opportunity to do a Super Ike competition with near maximum load.
We loaded the BigTex trailer to a total weight of 28,500 lbs and headed up the mountain. We are using this weight in order not to overload the maximum payload ratings on the trucks.
