Trucks and SUVs are getting more advanced and automated. The all-new 2017 Land Rover Discovery can be optioned with a towing package, which also comes with Advanced Tow Assist. The system is integrated into the Terrain Response 2 system and uses the same rotary knob to help the driver control the trailer in reverse. Terrain Response 2 is the next generation of Land Rover’s 4WD system.
The setup is relatively straight forward. There is “target” (three black dots on white background) that needs to be secured to your trailer not more than five feet away from the Discovery’s tailgate. Next, two measurements need to be entered into the vehicle’s computer: distance from the hitch ball to the axle center line and the maximum width of the trailer. The system supports trailers with one, two, or three axles. Once the Advanced Tow Assist system is activated, it’s a matter of using the knob on the center console to steer the truck and trailer. The system uses camera mounted under the side mirrors to help the driver see. However, there is no provision for a camera mounted on the back of the trailer for more visibility.
Can this system be helpful? Is it easier to operate than backing up the trailer on your own? Roman, Nathan, and Andre decided to find out with some friendly competition.
