Which GM V8 is better in your brand new truck? Is it the 5.3L V8 or the 6.2L V8? We get a rare opportunity to test both engines in very similarly configured truck the same day.
In the red corner is the middleweight contender, the 2016 Chevy Silverado with the 5.3L V8 and the 8-speed automatic transmission. This engine makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque using regular unleaded fuel. This is a crew cab truck equipped with the maximum towing package and 2WD only.
In the blue corner is the heavyweight contender, the 2016 GMC Sierra with the 6.2L V8 and the 8-speed automatic transmission. The big engine makes 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. We use the recommended premium fuel in this truck. This is also a crew cab with the maximum towing package and 2WD only.
The 6.2L V8 engine is an $2,499 option in the Sierra. So the question is: is the bigger engine worth the extra money or is the 5.3L V8 just fine at acceleration and towing MPG?
We run 0-60 MPH tests in both trucks. We take both trucks on our 100 mile highway loop towing a 5,600 lbs horse trailer. And we drag race the trucks.
Please go the TFLtruck Forum for an early look at the complete video comparing the two trucks. The video will go public on youtube this Saturday.
